Didn't work for me on QF2 recently on a Y+ to J upgrade. I did get a beep at the gate, but after a pause the attendant asked if I had any checked in bags, which I didn't.
Interestingly, speaking with someone seated around me, their colleague who is also a WP got a complimentary upgrade from Y+ to J when checking in....without having requested it.
Obviously QF would prefer me to keep the points?
