I have had a quick search through the upgrade threads in relation to the order that QF process upgrades and while there is heaps on status order I can't find the answer to this question:

Do upgrade requests PE-J get processed before Y-J:?:

I have a flight SYD-HKG coming up in a couple of days and have bought a PE ticket with an upgrade request in to J, so am curious if even though I am only silver, those who have bought PE tickets have their upgrades processed to J before any Y-J are processed. OR does status trump everything, so that a WP1/WP/SG who has a Y ticket gets their upgrade processed before those PS/NB who hold a PE ticket?

Thanks!

!

I think this will depend on Yield Management and loadings on particular flights.

Yes - PCV comes into it and this will be noticeable in the Lesley Grant drinks invites.

There are partners who do an identical amount of flying - same SCs etc but one will have a credit card points earn of 500,000+ per annum.

Both will be platinums and roughly on course to being LTG in a few years time yet the invite goes only to the partner/spouse with the massive credit card point earn.

This was the same a few years ago with the magazine - BTW whatever happened to that - it just seemed to stop coming!

I would have expected J->F, then PE->J, then Y->J, then Y->PE, in that order. With ranking by status within those groups.

If so, then that would contradict the actual Qantas T&C's. There is no reference to PCV/Fare/Cabin overriding Status levels - Status indeed rules!

16.3.3 Flight Upgrade Awards will be awarded to Members according to their Qantas Frequent Flyer status levels in the following order: Platinum Members first, then Gold Members, then Silver Members and then Bronze Members.

See the post#5 of the thread I linked to - going by that post it was Status, then fare bucket. This was before the introduction of PCV, but

I don't think anything in the T&Cs rules out my suggestion.

It would make no sense to do it any other way. You wouldn't do Y->J upgrades before J->F, as the J->F upgrades would free up seats in J that could be used for upgrades from Y.

Say I (platinum) were to submit an upgrade request for a family member (silver), would that be given priority over a gold member upgrading?

If you were a WP in whY with a points upgrade request to J only (ie you didn't register for a PE upgrade) and there was a QP in PE also with a points upgrade to J and there was only one J seat left wouldn't you feel slightly miffed if it went to the QP member over you?

Thanks all! Am very happy as the upgrade came through today! Noticed a waitlist segment appear in the booking this morning about 24 hours out and then got the text msg about 3pm this avo which was about 20 hours out from departure.

Was able to do online check in and select meals via eat on Q after the upgrade.

Loads in all cabins for tomorrows QF127 look pretty high so very grateful. Thanks QF!

Just a quick revisit.

To be clear I was referring in my prior post specifically to upgrades to J.

Overall I would envision the actual process as likely to be in the form of:

  1. J->F: CL upgrades to F before WP1 upgrades to F before WP upgrades to F before SG upgrades to F before PS upgrades to F before remaining upgrades to F. (Each upgrade so granted would free up a J seat.)
  2. Y-> J and PE->J: CL upgrades to J before WP1 upgrades to J before WP grades to J before SG upgrades to J before PS upgrades to J before remaining upgrades to J. (Those upgrades granted from PE would free up a W seat.)
  3. Y->W: CL upgrades to W before WP1 upgrades to W before WP grades to W before SG upgrades to W before PS upgrades to W before remaining upgrades to W.

The point being that Y and Y+ are treated as the same cabin when it comes to processing upgrades to J, so being booked into Y+ does not give one priority ahead of those in Y.

Personally, I think that is wrong, particularly under the new world order at QF where the amount you spend is king. Normally a Y+ ticket would have cost more than a Y ticket so the Y+ ticket holder should get priority in the J upgrade queue. (I realise that some Y+ on sale can be cheaper that the full fare Y bucket so there is a grey area).

No, that only works for P1 not platinum
I thought the status of the person requesting the upgrade was used to determine the order the upgrade request is processed.

Only if the status pax is travelling. I think P1 can request an upgrade even when not travelling and the travelling pax will inherit P1 priority.

Any wonderfully kindly P1 like to request an upgrade for QF 8 on 29 Oct... on 'my' behalf ;) Or, even QF 7 tomorrow.

From what i understand a P1 can request a upgrade for a family member but when the upgrade gets processed it gets done so as the family member membership tier, but when it is processed it gets done so as P1 status.

Basically (and know from first hand) i requested a dom upgrade for my PS brother on a recent trip from BNE-PER, it got put throught etc. The CSM mentioned to me that my brother also does alot if travel, i said "no he is PS" CSM said "he is listed as WP on the manifest"

It says it somewhere in the T&C's kinda like that i think.

I'm confused. Are you agreeing with what I said?
