Even then there is still slim hope. I once had an upgrade knocked back Hong Kong to Perth. But when I went to board I was given a new boarding pass for business. What's better is I never paid the 30,000 miles to upgrade.

Awesome, gate upgrades are being introduced but you will still pay with points.
