Both. Afternoon and evening flights are always full up front.

Bearing in mind J becomes more important on longer flights, especially on the 737 transcon, I'm not overly surprised. Not the greatest product, but far better than Y!

Only flown VA J domestic, Having staff block Y from disembarking until J is done is nice. Ill have to try QF later this year...

That actually occurs on NZ international as well - arrive at LAX and the FA stands directly in the path of the Y+ pax until the J (well, *A so C) pax are all offloaded.

QF does routinely announce that the front toilet on the 737s is for J pax only

Flew QF SYD-MEL over the weekend and the announcement was simply "there are 2 toilets at the back and 1 at the front", no mention that the front one was for J only, and no subsequent policing so it was even busier than usual.

I flew this morning and the announcement was definitely stating fwd lav was for business. Didn't stop the throng descending on it though ... I do fib a bit, I saw maybe 5 or 6, but there was no attempt by crew to stop it, in fact they even tended to step aside to let them through. Perhaps QF are trialling the J toilet being opened to all on 737 flights. Perhaps anyone adverse to that concept may like to formally complain, as it may be what they're judging it by.

I have given feedback on this to QF 3 times. No response first time, second time a generic "thanks, feedback is valuable blah blah", third time no response. All kind of pointless. I've also given positive feedback on the (very rare) CSMs that do enforce it (JetConnect crew only, if I recall correctly).

Maybe a CL wanted your seat so they moved your flight altogether

No, it wouldn't happen like that. This change happened in advance, so if the flight was full they would have just sold the CL a seat from wait list and managed the over sale on the day. People no show, change flights, miss connections, so it could easily be that a seat becomes available and they don't need to move anyone.

But they may have wanted to reserve that specific seat.. Its extremely unlikely and I was using it to some comedic effect

Great comparison - I'd probably also factor in the lounge side of things. Depending on the airport of origin, the domestic J lounge for QF can be far better than the standard VA lounge.

OK, I can now add at least part of this suggestion.

QF have really stepped up the ante with the new BNE J lounge. The VA mixed lounge just does not compare (except direct entry from the valet with VA). I tried the new QF BNE J lounge yesterday for the first time, and I was pretty impressed.

I'll be the odd one out. I fly BNE-CNS every week or two. I much prefer QF J to VA. To the extent that I only slightly care if I am Y or J with VA. I guess it's all about priorities.

Lounges - I rarely use. I only take carry on, and I rock up to the airport as close to boarding time as possible.

Seats/legroom - I'm short. I can comfortably stretch my legs out in Y, so not really important. I do have a substantial bum, so J is obviously more comfortable, but I still fit comfortably in Y seats. VA doesn't have leg rests. I love my leg rest! Same with lumbar support. Not a necessity, but I like it.

Food, I much prefer QF's choices.

The single most important factor for me... pillows and blankets . Whenever I get on a QF flight (J or Y), the first thing I do is ask for them. In Y on QF, you get a thin blanket and thin pillow. In J, you get an awesome doona style blanket and nice fat pillow. Ocassionally some lovely FA will get me J blanket and pillow when I'm in Y.

VA don't do blankets or pillows at all on flights less than 3 hours. So I have to take an extra backpack with my own.

I always sit window and never go to the toilet on planes, so the toilet traffic from Y doesn't bother me. I have seen a FA send a Y pax back before though.

So yes. Minimal attraction to J on VA for me. In fact, if my choices were Y window, or J isle, I'd choose Y.

NOTHING worse than the dirty unwashed using the J cabin as a toilet waiting room
