QF Y front row 747 - row 43 on new 3 Class config.

I've had row 43 before and have noted that row 44 is quite close to the lavatory doors and does get light pollution from the lavatories / noise / people milling around behind you.
I considered that, but we took 43ABC so that someone in A can sleep against the window. 44DEFG still available so we could take DE and G and hope no one gets seated in F, but no guarantees. It solves the light issue from the toilet, but not really the noise and no window to lean against to sleep.

I presume that relates more to illumination here and there rather than light odours emanating from the Lavatories ...

Correct - specifically the light inside the lavatory being on when the door is opened etc.

Okay Serfty, snabbu, Steady and MH_fan, here's what I have to report. firstly, I was on OEH so check the config.

Row 43 has extra leg room as we all know. The bulkhead has a recessed area from knee height to the floor. As noted elsewhere in the thread, the only armrest that raises is between E and F.

Row 44is a standard economy row. Seats all recline. The recline is consistent with the rest of Y. ABC back onto crew seats. There are lights over the exit, but these were dimmed by the crew after the meal service. The toilet door opened forward, but there was no light spilled to these seats.

EDIT: I should also add that 44A on this aircraft was missing a window which improved IFE visibility and gave a good spot to whack the pillow to try to sleep.

Row 46 is a standard Y row, but with extra leg room. More than the rest of Y, but not as much as 43. The only armrest that raises is between E and F. As noted elsewhere, 46A and 46K should be avoided at all costs. They are knee crunchers due to the escape slides.
I have not yet travelled on one of these refurbs in anything other that Business, but it looks like this will be changing in January. ( ;) )

Looking at the forward seating available it's pretty must wide open.

  1. Exit row and bulkhead seats are available to me for $180 each. Forgeddaboutit. (43A/B/C, 43/H/J/K, 46 B/C & 46 H/J).
  2. Cowling seats - not on your Nellie (46A, 46K)
  3. Row 44 (all 10 seats are available)
  4. 46D/E/F/G look interesting and I can select at no cost.

It's options 4 that are interesting me. As per the following, does anyone have any experience with these seats. I see tise from a couple of years ago:

id go 46, unless the mini cabin appeals.

serfty, if you can get 46 take it. It's better leg room than the rest of Y. Unless the mini cabin appeals.
I'm in exactly the same boat as you serfty. I'm not a huge fan of legroom that's restricted by a bulkhead (don't really care if someone reclines into me) and don't like the idea of arm rests that are fixed on long flights, so am tossing up between 44 or 47 D/G.

Go 44. The recline was good. At least as good as the rest of Y.

I also have never flown on a 747 in Y - there will be 5 of us and I am interested in the recline in row 44 - seatguru mentions it may be restricted but I note some earlier posts touch on it being ok - anyone have experience with this?

Would people pick DEFG and then either C or H or maybe grab a 4 and 3 block - AC & DFG leaving seats in the middle of both blocks hoping no one wants them..
no recline restriction in 44.

Is the legroom in 43A/C the same as in 43D/G?
yes. The bulkhead is offset

Looks like I'll be the bunny for you all. I'm on QF17 on Monday week. As PS my seat selection is rubbish at present. Hoping for something in that "mini cabin" though. Anyone with EF care to check what the load and seat options are for QF17 on July 13?

And Serfty, snabbu, Steady and MH_fan... Can you remind me next Monday morning to do some detailed checking. It's possible I'll forget with the stress of having the FO & SO with me.

good luck to you all. Happy to answer follow up questions.

FWIW, I had someone check EF at ~T-100 and it was 9's across the board, so I booked 44A, C & D hoping for a shadow in B. At checking I was told there were still 50 Y so we ended up with ABCDE between the three of us. Our lucky day I guess.

note also I have added the following to my earlier post: EDIT: I should also add that 44A on this aircraft was missing a window which improved IFE visibility and gave a good spot to whack the pillow to try to sleep.

So no window in 44A. Did you hsppen to notice if 44K has a viewing window or is it "same same.?"

Are there often people hovering waiting to use the WC?

I didn't check 44K sorry. I'm on QF 16 in a fortnight and will check if I remember.

There were people hovering for the loo, but they didn't come forward of the crew seats. The all stood in the space near the exit. It wasn't a problem for us, but I suspect 46ABC might not be happy, especially if they paid $180 to sit there.

So, is it a bulkhead in front of 46D/E/F/G (with/without cutout)?

Best Qantas 744 Seating

Hi,

Trying to pick my seats for LAX-NYC on QF11. It seems based on the Qantas website seat config it's a 744 V2.

SeatGuru Seat Map Qantas Boeing 747-400RR (744) Three Class V2

Anyone have any experience with row 46? It's next to the toilets, and seatguru recommend this seat despite proximity to toilets. However Qantas don't sell it as an extra legroom seat... because....? Is it the best pick if one doesn't mind the smells? Does it have one of those bulkhead walls which is fine for most people? I'm tall and want the extra legroom but prefer not to fork out $90 each, each way for my wife and I. 46DEFG are all available. 46ACBJHK are all booked up. Just curious if 46DEFG are actually dud seats??

Re: Best Qantas 744 Seating

There is a bit of fresh info in this [up] thread

Re: Best Qantas 744 Seating

Thank you for the report, Captain! I'll be sticking with row 43 on these birds. Mini cabin and extra legroom, here I come!

Re: Best Qantas 744 Seating

I've bit the bullet and jumped on 46J/K for upcoming LAX-JFK in October with a mate, Have also booked 44A/C for the JFK-LAX return in November... No-one would be stupid enough to claim 44B right? :p

Same here - $180 for each of the row 43 seats (A/B/C & H/J/K) that I can select.

Late to the party here, but I just checked in MMB for a flight ~7 days from now, and as WP travelling with two others on the same booking, I can select 43 H/J/K on MEL-LAX with no $180 fee. Is this a known perk or did I get lucky?

EDIT: I can also select Row 43 for no fee for a LAX-SYD flight ~4 months from now.

I do this often when travelling with two people. Book the A/C or the H/K seat and hope that no one picks the middle. On occasion when they put someone in the middle seat, just offer the stranger in the middle seat the Aisle or Window instead when they arrive. I've never had anyone refuse and ask to stay in the middle, which would make for a very awkward flight!

This is a bump or a note to everyone that bought the USD444 fares that Lurker has seen that the front row (43) with leg room and cut out is currently free for a WP (at least).

I checked our booking today, last time was late July (and I lost my WP) at the end of July and they were then $180 a seat to choose.
I can also select row 43 for no fee (they are not longer red seats in the Qantas seat selection key) - I am now SG and my partner is still WP.
