Thanks everyone, as usual the info I was after was already posted. I've selected 43A,C and hoping for a shadow. With over 4 weeks till departure I'm optimistic.

Hi folks - I've got a front row seat in Y (38A) selected on an upcoming 3-class QF5, and was wondering if there is any chance this would be a refurbished 744... Are all the refurbs going to have Y starting at row 43? Been looking for an easy to decipher guide to determining "Is my QF bird a refurb?", but seems it is a little hard to find one. Maybe my search skills have been 'enhanced'?

You have this configuration: http://www.qantas.com.au/infodetail/flying/inTheAir/ourAircraft/744-56J40PY275Y.pdf

That is the only non refurbished 744 configuration Qantas have these days.

puppysparkes - can you come back with what happens re the shadow please? SWMBO and I (both WP's) have pre-selected 43A and 43B on QF5 next April but would change to 43A and 43C and hope that 43B becomes a shadow if that is what happens. Won't risk it otherwise.

Thanks

No problem I'll update on 12/10.

If it were me, I'd take the chance and grab the A and C seats. Worst case scenario and someone is in B, offer them either A or C to swap with. Highly unlikely anyone in B would refuse such an offer. Also, someone is much more likely to grab C if it is available than B.

My 2 cents :)

cheers Daver6 - I actually went back in and changed it to 43A and 43C after some further thought along the lines of your 2c above. I'm very interested to see what happens with puppsparkes though.

cheers

Just an update on a very lightly loaded QF5 for me - it was still X9 at T-24. I was initially on an older bird in 38A, but the travel Gods shone down on me and I ended up with a refurbished 43A and a double shadow... until the last 20 mins before flight time and then 43C was issued. It's a good seat, and I'd definitely pick it again... though I do probably prefer the 'stretch under the seat space' in Y on overnighters. Plenty of WP attention and reference to name, but no special offers of anything off the Y card.

That's my cheeky plan!

One thing nobody has mentioned so far... When in row 43, after take off I get my laptop carry-on (sturdy bag on wheels) and put it on the floor in front of me up against the bulkhead. Makes a nice footrest, and great for sleeping.

Are all of the armrests in 43 A/B/C and H/J/K fixed, or does one of them lift up? TIA.

The tray table being stored in the armrests in the aisle side ensures the armrests in the triple seats are fixed.

Perhaps some of the central ones are (E/F) not, but at most this would give a pair.

I remember that H, J and K were all fixed as the had meal trays and IFE located in them...

Thank you serfty, petercr and markis10.

I'd like to try for 43E/F but they're currently not showing as available (I'm WP). Have settled for 43H, but will check closer to departure time.

Success, entire row to ourselves! Albeit with late boarding and departure! Who cares I've got 3 weeks off. We have a few bubs next to us but they are zonked out and I snore louder than they do anyway...

I have not yet travelled on one of these refurbs in anything other that Business, but it looks like this will be changing in January. ( ;) )

Looking at the forward seating available it's pretty must wide open.

  1. Exit row and bulkhead seats are available to me for $180 each. Forgeddaboutit. (43A/B/C, 43/H/J/K, 46 B/C & 46 H/J).
  2. Cowling seats - not on your Nellie (46A, 46K)
  3. Row 44 (all 10 seats are available)
  4. 46D/E/F/G look interesting and I can select at no cost.

It's options 4 that are interesting me. As per the following, does anyone have any experience with these seats. I see tise from a couple of years ago:
... but for me at 6' 43C/H or 43D/G(hope for no bubs) would be the go. 46D/G look interesting ....
yes..ALL of row 46 (A to K) is pay for exit row seating as there is no 'seperate' walk thru area from the left toilet to the right toilet. note on the seatmap on QANTAS.com these seats have a red band on them denoting them as exit seating.
