Qantas gets serious about Virgin Australia with 787s | Plane Talking

....With claims from the 787 line that two Dreamliners are being built in Qantas colours....

If true this is great news, potentially a game changer - I'd certainly be happy to see a 787 on HKG-SYD for the late night departure over 333s. Also perhaps a reversal in the trend of asset transfers to JQ and recognising that QF is the valuable brand in the group...

I can only dream. Those tired old 767's need to go. Although it'll be interesting to see where they are deployed; i'd assume transcon to compete with the new 330's VA are putting on...

I think they would go international with the a330s coming back to replace the 767s - that was the plan anyway with the 330s coming back from JQ initially.

I wonder who his sources are?

...i'm not yet filled with confidence.

He was invited to join the tour of the 787 by Boeing and given his decades long background in aviation journalism I'm inclined to think this is fairly likely to be true - I've been reading the blog from some time and whilst it is quite anti-QF current management there is always a lot of factual detail (ie it's no AusBT!)

I read an article last night that went into quite a bit of detail about the "revised' QF/JQ 787 plans...

787's on domestic will make an impact.... That's a "game changer" right there

I am still waiting for Virgin to order 20 x 787's for domestic though.....

Finally some good news for the QF brand!

Interesting seeing that 3-3-2 configuration too, that’s certainly different, but would assume QF would just do 3-3-3. Either way, sooner not later sounds very good for Qantas at this stage.

Having seen some interior pics 2-4-2 seems really spacious, would like to see it and it's the most convenient but i think 3-3-3 is more likely.

The 787 decision may have been related to the lay offs in Melbourne. The 767 maintenance is one of the things earmarked to go - so if they can get rid of that sooner by getting 787s from JQ, then this may have legs.

Not surprised in the least that QF will get some, did everyone think they were going to get 5 more years out of the 767s?

Fingers crossed - I agree Ben seams against the way Qantas is being run and its direction not Qantas itself.

Hmmmm just had a nasty thought, what if this potentially meant a switcheroo - 787s to QF and future A380s to JQ:!:

Meh this site is usually off the boil these days. Hoping it's true but will wait to hear it officially before recognizing!

If it is true then it is an admission that the old B767's won't last another 5 years. Actually they would last as they are built like the proverbial brick s#@*house but fuel and maintenence costs must come into play. Personally - I don't mind the 767's myself! But if QF can get the 'ol girls retired earlier than that and use some B787's then that could be a refreshing sign of management confidence in QF mainline....

Considering some of the QF 762s are still in service and are about to hit the 30 year mark with other airlines, they have long legs!

I agree - a credit to the engineers who designed them. I wonder how many A330's will be airworthy and flying in say 2032?

I would imagine a cabin refresh from OGR-OGV and you may do (OGQ and P at a push).

There was a member who did have quite an informative post as to what other airlines have done with their 763 interiors. Perhaps a case of what if...
