QF44 last night - not a great flight to be on

A big cost would come from having an aircraft out of position. An Emirates 380 stuck in SYD could create a lot of flow on issues. A QF 737 in MEL instead of SYD is probably not a big deal. (And if it was, maybe they could find a crew and ferry it upto SYD to be waiting for end of curfew. Pax would go on scheduled services)

Not really, the EK A380 being stuck in Sydney would only affect the passengers on that flight, given they are heading back to the land of plenty (EK have 26) when it comes to A380s it would not be hard to find a replacement, the joy of having a big fleet.

Thanks. I didn't realise the fine was so small.

Once you factor in the cost of diverting, accommodating all passengers and the rolling delay for the next service, 550k doesn't seem all that bad. Maybe the figures don't quite stack up for a 737, but the long haul operators who have copped the fine would definitely come out ahead.

Agree totally!

If it wasn't financially the best option then EK wouldn't have said "let's fly"

Finding beds for an A380 full of paxs at 11pm would not be fun.

If it was my decision I would say "Screw let's fly"

It would be interesting if all the airlines signed a joint open letter to the government stating that in the interests of the passenger they will no longer obey the curfew where the breech is caused by unexpected delays.

I'm sure that the government will be delighted to collect the fines.

All a government needs to do is say that they'll take the licence of the Captain...

Meanwhile Jets continue to land at Sydney all through the night, so long as they don't have self loading freight!

The feedback that I have is that you don't breach these rules.

Yep that would stop curfew breaking instantly.

Like going to the bank at closing if you're in the queue then you're in the queue!

If you are queued by 11pm you should be allowed to land.

Sydney is a joke.

This is the problem with your post, you are trying to bring logic, reason and common sense into the argument. Those qualities are never welcome when discussing the Sydney Airport curfew!!

What has a OneWorld Explorer fare got to do with it?

(hover over the owe)

Argh damn AFF auto-hint machine has picked up that word; of course it had to apply it in the wrong context. :-|

Of course I just meant the plain word, as in the O in IOU...

I wonder if any AFFers were on this flight as it would be interesting to know what hotel they stayed at. It would have been a late one so hope they weren't on a MEL/SYD flight too early the next day!

My brother had a similar experience in MEL a little while back on the last flight MEL/SYD & pushed back from the gate at 2130 but due due a heavy backlog of flights landing, they lined up on the active runway at 2200, the engines powered up then they their arrival in SYD denied by CBR so engines powered down & they taxiied back to the terminal.

Guess the SC/points earned would have been on AKL/MEL on QF44 then MEL/SYD on QFxx_.
