Just woke up to the fantastic news that QF8 (DFW - SYD) has been cancelled this Friday!! I now have to stay an extra night in Austin and return via LAX on Saturday and then stump up another full days parking!

Nice one Qantas...

On top of that they have booked me on United from Austin to LAX so I also loose my OW lounge access at Austin I think?

My QF17 flight SYD to LAX has been cancelled on 12th August too. Got re-routed via AKL instead, at least they found me an Air NZ J seat I guess.

Wonder what the reason is for all these transatlantic cancellations?!

Correct, you won't get access to any lounge in Austin unless you have Star Alliance gold status (with an airline other than UA).

Technically you can buy a united club day pass for US$59 per person but that probably isn't worth it unless you've got a long time at the airport.

These days you just have to be thankful that Qantas have rebooked you.

I have Platinum with United so I’m no farther forward 🙂

According to Qantas, I’m still booked on the original AUS to DFW flight tomorrow and the AUS - LAX - SYD on Saturday! 🙄

Qantas had planned A380 flights for LAX this week, but the aircraft aren't available as expected. So, these have been replaced with B787s, which then have to be pulled from other routes. Wasn't aware of the Austin diversion either, which certainly makes things messier!

QF8 seems on track tonight from DFW, albeit delayed.

All sounds very messy but no chance getting on a diverted flight as it will be fully loaded and not breaking the journey to add more pass

This must be the weather event in question:

We had a simlar experience 01JUN at LAX when we disembarked from the A380 from Sydney. Had about a 4 hour wait for our AA flight to DFW, and were the ninth aircraft in line taxiing to the runway. All those in front of us got away but as we nosed up to the runway, the pilot came on the broadcast and said that a serious storm had closed DFW, with hundreds of aircraft caught on the ground there. Said we had to hold for 50 minutes to see what transpired. 10 minutes later he came on again and said we're going back to the terminal. 3 further attempts to depart, but cancelled before we even got onboard. They finally cancelled the flight around 1630, and we all had to find hotels for the night.
Stuff happens sometimes.

Couple points:
  • If you are being rerouted via LAX on United, I would recommend checking out the United Club there. When I last visited there (pre-COVID) they had a decent F&B selection plus a terrace where you can experience the sweet smell of Avgas burning!
  • If you have the patience, I would highly recommend high tailing it to the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT, or Terminal B) which is about a 25 minute hike airside from Terminal 7/8 (where United takes off from). There are a number of really good lounges you can access, namely the Star Alliance lounge with its shower. Also, if you have a AmEx Platinum card, there's the Centurion lounge just after security that's got a spa and a decent food & bar selection.
  • Make sure you double dip on the points. Credit the United/NZ flights to your United account then ask Qantas for the ORC on the flight you were supposed to take!
  • If for some reason you were booked into United Polaris or Air New Zealand business class out of LAX for some reason, you will have access to the fine Polaris lounge at Terminal 7. The sleeping room and showers weren't bad. And there's nothing quite like having a sit down dining experience at a lounge - something you'd never experience in a QF lounge

Thanks for the info. Once I get to LAX my flight home is on QF12 so I'll have access to the Qantas Lounge (sadly the F lounge is still closed). I have a 7 hour layover.

The only part of the trip with no lounge access will be Austin as I'm booked on Delta (thought it was United originally), but not planning on being there for too long.

According to my Qantas account they still have me flying AUS to DFW tonight and then AUS to LAX tomorrow, and of course LAX to SYD tomorrow night also.

....on top of the above, every time I go in to the Qantas app or website, it's asking me to confirm the changes but then won't allow me to do anything else like view seats etc. So I exit, go back in and it wants me to accept changes again!

The F Lounge at LAX reopens on the 11th August
