QF97 BNE-HKG to become red-eye

Apologies for the tardy response - have been off-line.

I agree with NM's summary of pro & con, and perhaps 'dodgy' is a bit strong, but I can't relax in an A330 until the AirFrance disaster, Qantas autopilot disengagement and sudden altitude losses are explained.

I suppose you could point me to a similar list of incidents with the 744, maybe even a longer list, but please don't!!

I'm not trying to offer an explanation but put some perspective on your thoughts.
Each year around the world a relative handfull of people are killed in air crashes. In Oz we kill someone on the roads about every two hours and yet it is accepted without much question.
Do you avoid travelling in motor vehicles :?:

And I read that in China, they lose about 200 lives per day on the roads .

Although when there are car crashes resulting in multiple casualties there is a larger amount of news reporting and attention paid versus a single casualty crash. Higher casulaties results in higher levels of attention, and the same is true of aircraft crashes.

Having said that, there is some hypocrisy in the way road transport is treated versus other forms. For example, where a rail crosses a road, we insist on physical gates, ringing bells, flahing lights etc, but we don't insist on the same where road crosses road.

I realise the global passenger aviation safety record is great really, and I generally take flights without any trepidation, but I do look at the NCAPS safety ratings when I choose which car to buy (don't necessarly buy a tank, but am wary of little coke cans) and am similarly cognisant of potential patterns building with regard to particular aircraft or carriers. If I can easily avoid something questionable, I will, but I HAVE taken quite a few flights in A330s, and probably will do so into the future - it's only a probablility game after all, and the chances of disaster on any individual flight are miniscule. And it's only going to go bad under particular combinations of circumstances - but I'd prefer these to be understood, and they don't seem to be so with the A330 at present.

Gotta love it. An 'enhancement'.

Qantas Enhances Hong Kong Schedule
Qantas announces new operating times for its Perth, Brisbane and Sydney to Hong Kong sevices with overnight flights to provide greater convenience, more time in the business day and better connections into mainland China.

The new times will give customers access to a wider range of connections from Hong Kong to London and North East Asia, including Beijing and Shanghai. Perth, Brisbane and Sydney services will now connect with QF29 between Hong Kong and London, providing an additional United Kingdom option.

Well for a lot of asians who need to go back to their cities to visit families it would be an "enhancement" because of better connections at asia. Most people I know (as well as me) actually prefer to fly overnight to HKG so we have more time to do things on the ground rather than "Up In The Air".

Well having a 3 year old means travelling during the daytime is much easier and it means we start the holiday off relatively fresh which is much more preferable even if it means losing a day. The direct flight out of PER is to become an overnight one in April, hence we leave for a holiday up there Monday.

it does mean better connections to QF 29 HKG-LHR.....
But if I really want to take QF29 to LHR, I am happy to take an evening flight BNE-MEL and enjoy the easy terminal transfer and a visit to the FLounge and commence the QF29 experience from MEL.

Please Qantas, give me back my daytime option to HKG without needing to leave home at 5am and connect in SYD

Note that as a AAdvantage member, I get the same benefits on CX who are maintaining their daytime flight, even though not daily (which QF97 isn't anyway).

Can you run the gauntlet of a transfer at SIN? I think that's what we'll do next time we head up there (ex PER).

Like some I prefer the night flight to HKG. Next trip is Syd-Mel-HKG with a meeting in Melb (hopefully at the airport) and off to HKG J using some points - maybe an F seat . I'm praying... Don't mind the 330 but prefer 747 especially upstairs.
Full day work and a little fun in HK before back on BA28 "J" to LHR. As this is 12+ hours I should get some good sleep.
For me the most efficient use of my time, even though i will be a bit of a wreak. I get bored on daytime flights. Work policy is no working on laptops or documents! for confidentiality reasons.
Agree with NM it would be hard arriving so early to start the holiday or family thing but as I do (for family) have a second flight and a 2-3 hour drive in the UK, night flights are really the only option.:-|

Unfortunately does not work well from BNE. The 7:30pm arrival of QF51 into SIN does not make a same-day connection to HKG with CX. And I am not about to switch to SQ when I have lifetime status on QF and OneWorld Emerald status via AA.

NM, the best way to avoid the BNE-HKG redeye is to move to SYD :) You can choose between plenty of flights options (up to 7 flights per day) from QF/CX/VS ....

or stop going to Hong Kong:shock::shock:;)
Ahh, you have been talking with my family.

Looks like the frequency of visit to HKG has slowed now. So that is a good thing for all concerned .

It would be a great deal easier if QF had a flight exPer at 0900 or earlier instead of 1230..... (They did at one time) Or if CX had a slightly later flight SIN-HKG

I can't help to think that QF do not want you to be able to use that connection. Even though there are some fares HKG-PER that allow the SIN connection. At this point I would jump to the first one that code shared PER-HKG with AA for connections HKG-USA or PER-NRT with AA.

Don’t you need AsiaMiles/MarcoPoloClub points to upgrade? I thought Qantas points were only for Qantas upgrades!
Good question/ point. Perhaps it's not a good value proposition, though IIRC it was once possible to "launder" miles and points through AMEX (to redeem on CX). Is this still the case?

I wonder how the new PER CX Double Daily flights will affect QF

CX173 HKG-PER 22:55 330
CX172 PER-HKG 15:35
