QFF Platinum requesting release of extra Classic Reward seats?

I've done AA A321 F .... I wasn't that fussed with it. You can see comments and photos in a TR link in my signature.

Although I haven't stepped foot on a 787 (outside of a QF tour back in 2012), I reckon the new J cabin will win on all fronts.
I flew on one of these 3 cabin A 321s in J round 4 months ago and was really impressed .
Great seating and service and food and drinks - so much better than QF would ever offer.

This is on my bucket list for coast-to-coast.

Just tried to request 2 Business reward tickets for my wife and my daughter on the premium line after I purchasing a Business ticket on Qantas for Jan 11 2020 SIN-->SYD

I saw more than 8 tickets on Business saver on both flights in the afternoon from Singapore to Sydney that day. However, the agent told me that both flights are full for redemption even for Platinum members. Can anyone suggest why this is the case even when there are heaps of Biz Saver tickets available online?

Should I try to call again in a few weeks time? Will this matter or will they open up new award tickets in the future?

Thanks

You could ask them if they can pass it along to yield management.

Jan 11 2020 would have been on sale for some time and others with WP (or above) status may have already requested seats be released. Just because there's lots of saver seats available it doesn't mean that there's already a bunch of people who have booked classic reward seats. Also January is school holidays so a peak period meaning they may not see nearly so much of a need to release seats when everyone wants to travel.

I don't believe WPs can request award space be opened for family members unless they are a member of the travelling party. (having a separate revenue booking means they wouldn't be)

Best to look for space in F or Y+ if J is getting declined and you want to be on the same flight.

That seems to be the case for platinum one. Interesting that the listed platinum benefits does not include "extra award seats" as per below.

  • Exclusive access to extra Qantas Classic Flight Reward seats
Preferential access to Qantas Classic Flight Reward seats when you book through qantas.com. Platinum One members also have access to extra Qantas Classic Flight Reward seats26 where available, on selected Qantas domestic and international flights with a QF flight number on their ticket.
This benefit is available for Platinum One members and eligible family members in the same booking. For assistance, please call our Premium Reservations team on the number displayed on the back of your card.

(this probably should go in the master thread on WP requesting reward seats imho)

Jan 11, 2020? Right in the middle of peak season. I'm not surprised. Just because QF is willing to sell saver (or even sale) inventory doesn't mean they have to open up space.

Also the P1 family member clause quoted above is irrelevant as the Wife/Daughtr are not on the same booking as the OP, For all intents and purposes this is asking for a new booking.

I understand you want to travel together(obviously) but the idea to look for Y+ ((or F) on the flight is good, or even potentially look to the MEL or BNE flights to connect (far less ideal, of course).

Good luck.

Or actually not irrelevant at all, but precisely on the point that not even platinum one can request award release for family members NOT on the same booking. As per @sbor90 's post that said platinum can't request for family travelling on a separate booking.
Quoting the actual benefit to show that the family members have to travel together to highlight the issue for the OP.

Would love to hear if anyone has experience requesting space for themselves and family members, then found themselves suddenly unable to travel so split the PNR and cancelled their seat

When you say business saver seats available , what fare class were they?
If there were no "I" s available , then very much no chance .
Even if "I"s are available, it is up to QFF to release them - it is not automatic and i am aware of PLat colleagues who have been turned down when "I"s were available and the proposed dates were not during school or seasonal holidays.
It's a lottery and the QF yield management system is a "dark hole".

In saying that I realise if there is no current Sale fare available, only Saver and Flex would show even if I > 0.

right. My apologies. I misinterpreted.

So yeah, neither WP or WP1 can request new rewards bookings for family members with "seat release request" if they are not also flying.

The idea to book 3 then cancel the flying member is interestig. I suppose it would work as once the booking is ticketed and paid for with points etc there's no reason to cancel that just because the P1 who booked it isn't flying. Of course it also requires the release of, for example, 3 J seats rather than the 2 that one may actually want (using the OP's situation as example). It's an interesting idea.

Platinums and above can request for award seats to be released for anyone who is an eligible family member. It is not a requirement for the member to be travelling on the booking where the request is being made.

Have rules for award seat requests ever been published anywhere? IIRC it's an unwritten benefit.
