Yes I have done this. Booked SYD-SFO-SYD in J but could only get Y on the return. Called up to request a J seat to be released, and they obliged with no fee, refunded the original redemption then debited the new redemption. Ticketed in about 48 hours.

Calling up requesting a QF11 F seat release [while holding a confirmed Classic Award in J]......"No problem...Let's see what the computer says...."

5 minutes later: $2.72 and 51,000 points poorer in exchange for 2A.

Some months ago I asked for two seats in J for a domestic flight, when only one was available online. I was advised to book my mother into the one visible and then ask (as a WP) for another to be released. It was declined after a manual request was put in. In the end I bought a Y seat and upgraded.

My process in post #116 was essentially the same as that used by JessicaTam though with the opposite outcome.

This is no different to asking for a standard award. You simply need to marry up all of the other *O carrier flights to the QF ones.

I'm QF Gold, but a close friend is QF Platinum (for many years) and he was able to get a business seat released for me SCL - Syd in September. Took two phone calls, but it happened three days out from the flight. He's had great success in having seats released in the past but tells me that it has become harder in 2015.

Just had an F seat released for MEL-LHR for just before Christmas, very happy with that benefit. One of the best uses of QFF points I can find once my own circumstances and the chauffeur transfers are taken into consideration.

Called today about getting an economy seat released HKG-SYD in August. No go. Flexible only available on that flight.

Interesting part of the conversation was whether I had to pay the $60 booking fee. She said no. She has been told not to charge the booking fee. Wonder if all consultants will do the same. Should have written down her name for future reference.

Probably not, I have two segments for the same route in the booking, one for the request and one for the existing booked route. But I think your questions confirms that the answer to my question is no

For Mid December 2016:
I have been successful in getting 1U on QF93 by request to WP line. This was immediately after obtaining online 2U on the same flight. I was actually asked would I be interested in a P seat instead. I declined as I wanted to conserve FF points.

The following day I realised I needed to move all 3U seats to the next day. I waited until seats were released online. Found 2U online and booked them and only then cancelled the other 2U from previous day. Then rang to request changing date of the requested U. WP line said they have to apply for manual override. Had to wait another 24 hour. A bit anxious. But was successful.

The most important msg here is never cancel a U seat for another day until you have managed to rebook it. When I cancelled the 2U, I only saw 1U returned to the pool. Also only do a request for award when none is available online as the consultants will just pull it off the online availability.

Expand the details of the booking and it'll show if the seat is "Requested" or "Confirmed".

For what it is worth, I've had two successful F Award requests (the second one being 14 or so days from travel) in the last year. I think QF WP might be worth chasing while I have a healthy points balance for that benefit alone!

Well in my experience they don't process payment until it's approved, so wouldn't you have to talk to them again anyway?

My latest one showed up as a voucher and watching it while the operator processed it I saw it move from "Requested" to "Confirmed".

Last week I was successful in requesting an F award seat on QF12 in about 5 weeks time. Expert flyer was showing F5 A3 at the time...

I had missed a call from an unknown number, which could mean Qantas. The question (non-crytic) was asked to try to gauge if I should call qantas to check, or whether a ghost segment was just normal programming.
