QFF Platinum requesting release of extra Classic Reward seats?

Number 3 sounds like rubbish. Never heard of such a thing.
Do you know where the Agent was based ?
I can’t imagine anyone in HBA saying this.

Thanks Fiona
Don't know where he was based, seemed rude to ask.

Had sufficient accent that I did not catch his name, but seemed quite familiar with the process.

One of the thing is that when you are working with a black box, people (this was tested on Pigeons but also applies to people) develop 'stories' about how things work to try and make sense of it.

It may well be that staff have developed an idea that multiple requests fail, or that once a request is refused follow on requests will be. Because that is what they have observed. But the real reason may be that block of flights were not available.

We have our own stories that you can read in this thread about what you should do or not.

Human's hate mysteries.

These flights are a long way off, so will give it the 48 hours suggests but when I ring back will ask to test multiple possibilities. Don't want to spend weeks on the phone after all.

I second @RichardMEL 's recommendation regarding putting in multiple requests at the same time. It certainly helps to be flexible with dates where possible and is more efficient for everyone. Earlier this year I was asking for a release of 3* J seats from USA to AU in mid January 2024 - I was happy to depart from any USA port and arrive in any AU port. I put forward 6 or 7 different options when talking to the call centre. Had success with one of them - so happy days.

Splendid, thanks for the feedback

I am similarly happy to leave from any Australian locations and fly to basically anywhere in Europe.
They did want specific days and flight though when I rang.

I presume they make this deliberately a bit 'mysterious' so they can't be held to anything and they don't get flooded with requests.

In WP/P1 land, April-June next year is not considered "a long way off" anymore.
There have been a few months for people to book/request seats for April, which is plenty of time for others in your position to do the same and snap up the seats.

Best way to do it is to call the day the schedule opens, ie. almost a year out.

Well I can also go in Oct next year. Was thinking they may be happy to release seats of flights where the seats are not selling closer to the date of departure.

But expect I will learn in time.

My Platinum runs out at the end of October and there is no way it will be renewed, so I need to make the best use of it I can at present.

Thankfully have enough time between now and then to learn the ropes (hopefully)

Sorry, I was probably a bit short form in my response. When I made my requests, I was very specific in flight numbers, ports and dates. e.g. I requested QF94 LAX-MEL on Wednesday 10, Thursday 11 January, QF12 LAX-SYD, Wednesday 10, Thursday 11 January etc. Another thing I did was check availability on expertflyer for 'I' fare class availability to make sure I was only requesting for flights where there was availability. I also made my request back in May, so approximately 8 months in advance.

Thanks Fiona

I was told on Monday after my request for J and PE were turned down that I could try again in a couple of months. I elected to keep the Y reward seat, that can, as was suggested to me, be cancelled. I'll keep an eye out for a J or PE seat between now and departure next August and might ring again if they announce a J sale that includes JNB. I don't have an alternate route for SYD-JNB.

Just called QANTAS to s3ee about releasing an A or I Sydney to Heathrow return
Out April 21st (I3 on QF1), back June 1st (I9 on QF2)

Declined

A few bits of advice the chap on the premium desk gave:

1) Only request 1 flight pair at a time

2) If you are declined straight away - that is it - only goes to a human if they don't get an immediate response (seems to contradict previous advice that it will go the a human to assess again anyway)

3) Give it 48 hours before ringing back and trying again with different days as once system rejects you once it will likely keep doing so (maybe superstition? - if this is correct it seems incredibly inefficient)

What has other people's experience been? If the 1st flight checked gets rejected have immediate followups been accepted (for different flights / day).

There is a window of "I"s from April 21st till 24th Syd - Heathrow and then plenty of "I"s coming back in early June so lots of flights to test.

Will call back on Thursday and see where I get to.

Have checked my bookings and there is no place holder for a Syd - Heathrow flight
This is what Fiji say. All of it is false (though, remember they have been trained this way so they are instructed to only do one request at a time).

The best approach is to be flexible and request +- 3 days of when you want to fly.

It's more that this isn't a strictly published benefit - at least I've never actually seen this anyway. Now, QF use phrases like "Access to more reward seats" or "The Highest Upgrade Priority and Access to Reward Seats" - and one could infer that includes this ability to request reward release, but (and more than happy to be corrected here) it's not an official benefit for WP or P1 members, but it is something they do.

In this respect thus it's not something they publicise a lot though I've never had agents say no, or it's not a possibility or anything like that. It's one of those really good intangible benefits for high tier members that is available. I also think because there's no guaranteed releases of anything, there can never be a guaranteed benefit.

imo.

2x J seats released on QF15 for early Sep.

Was I class on it but can’t recall numbers.
Bot said no but was approved on manual review.
They also released U on the connecting flight from SYD
The manual review is the biggest thing I will miss since being kicked out of the club and may be a motivation to get back in. As I am in ADL I take it for granted that the dom J seats will just get released when connecting to/from internal international.

Post edited to fix a typo.

In your experience, what percentage of requests initially rejected by the "bot" get approved via manual review?

Not to answer for Matt, but as a P1 too (yeah Matt, you're still in the club as far as I'm concerned :) ) I'd say my strike rate has been very very high. Around 80-90% (I've not kept track). Caveat to this, that unlike someone like Matt who usually is after 2 or 3 seats, I fly solo, and it's MUCH easier to get one seat released (for obvious reasons) - so my anecdotal experience is probably very skewed due to that simple fact. I've gotten F released on SYD-LAX multiple times (and MEL-LAX when it had F), J on MEL-DFW. You can get an idea of where I go a bit I guess (ie: never tried the much harder LHR foe example). I'd also surmise that probably half would initially have been rejected but come through via manual review. For example, my most recent requests to get to DFW had an initial request MEL-DFW for my date rejected initially, MEL-SYD-LAX(F the next day) instant approval - which I grabbed, and I also put in for MEL-SYD-DFW on my preferred date (well really the request was for SYD-DFW, the team can usually add a dom connection pretty easily). So at that initial request stage I at least had a way to get to the US - not on my preferred date, but I had a seat (and internal US could be sorted separately). The othrs went for manual review, and MEL-DFW was approved about five hours later and so the SYD-DFW wasn't needed and removed, and of course I gave back the SYD-LAX F seat. From my point of view from initial call I had *something* near my preference initially which I consider pretty good, and was happily surprised to then get my actual preference mere hours later. Again, only requesting single premium seats really helped.

Others mileage will absolutely vary.

I have not kept an eye on what percentage is bot approved vs manual review but when requesting multiple seats, I think most of them were manually reviewed. Below are flights I have requested this year and have been approved:

x3 ADL-SYD-WLG (J) for the Apr 23 school holiday period (bot approved)
x3 AKL-SYD-ADL (J) for the Apr 23 school holiday period (manual review)
x3 ADL-SYD-HND (J) for the Apr 24 school holiday period (manual review)
x3 ICN-SYD-ADL (J) for the Apr 24 school holiday period (manual review)
x1 SIN-SYD-ADL (F) (manual review)
x1 ADL-SYD-ICN (J) (manual review)
x1 HKG-MEL-ADL (J) (manual review)

Prior to covid the strike rate on bot approvals was higher and at the moment it seems like QF don't like releasing seats if they think they can sell them as revenue. This is just my 2 cents worth, there are some routes that the bot just seems to approve and others that are difficult to get, the other factor in my case is I am normally looking for at least x2 J seats during school holiday periods. IME getting to Asia is relatively easy, the US is a bit more restrictive but if your flexible and depending on the final location I will accept seats on any aircraft that will get us to/from the US and not to concerned if we need to transit through LAX, DFW or SFO. Also the US is interesting as there have been times that J seats have been denied but they would approve F. Getting to the UK seems to be tricky but can be done and normally with a manual review. The ones that have surprised me and came back approved after a manual review were SYD-HNL, on 2 occasions I have had 2x J seats released for my parents. For their last request SYD-HNL was approved but coming back they had go LAX-SYD so they booked HNL-LAX as revenue. I also agree with @RichardMEL requesting a single seat is often easier and being flexible around departure location and dates are key. As an example the flights we have ICN-SYD-ADL for the Apr 24 school holidays are a few days later than our preferred date so our daughter will miss a couple of days of school. Being based in ADL, QF always has found us domestic J seats when connecting to/from international flights. Also on 1 or 2 occasions I have had a single seat released despite Expert Flyer showing D0, I0 and seem to recall @Princess Fiona has also experienced similar, this does not happen very often and would not consider it to be the norm. Over the years I have had a great deal of success in getting seats released but I have also had knock backs along the way mainly to the UK and a few other locations. Prior to D inventory being made available for P1s in 2017/18?? most of my requests had to be manually reviewed.

Can a Platinum member request a release of a classic award for a JetStar flight? The reason I ask is there is one specific JetStar flight I'd like to book when I gain Platinum status (i.e. SYD > MEL departing out of the International terminal).

Thanks in advance,

No they cannot

P1 requesting:

2 x U class on QF36 02APR24 ( J9 C9 D7 I1) rejected by analyst but offered 2 x U class on QF38 same day

Also offered 2 x U class on QF36 or QF38 on 01APR24

Timing of QF38 arrival on 03APR24 doesn't work for me, so going back to the well and asking for just the 1 x U class on QF36 - other pax will travel on already confirmed QF38. Will report back on result.
