Similar rules for Japan from late-March to early-May this year.

Best bet is to try a few weeks out with Business Saver fares available. I snared SYD-HND-SYD J return over the Christmas break just gone with 5 days notice

Probably too early would be the guess.

My HND - SYD flight yesterday (7 Jan) was a WP release in Nov 2024. I even checked EF a few days before the flight and there was still I4 and N3... (There most certainly wasn't anything besides YH in economy when I checked in Nov).

J ended up full but i suspect quite a few upgrades or last minute J purchases as there were 2 separate teenage girls in clutches after skiing accidents.

While the process is opaque to QFFers, I would imagine that cancelled tickets or any other changes to inventory (eg aircraft change) might lead to a different result.

I'd suggest easier than many (most) other ports - It's not generally as heavy in terms of premium / business traffic. Get on the blower and give it a try?

I think you'll find rather than loads, its whether QF has blackout periods for it or not (which upthread suggests it does atm, but later might get unlocked). You can also sign up for trials i believe if you really need to check.

Not available for upgrades on tickets already purchased, only for new CR bookings.

But you can lodge requests to open seats on existing award bookings which can achieve the same thing.

For example - you've got a classic economy award but want to fly business. You can call and say you want to request a business award seat to change (do not say word 'upgrade') your booking class.

The request will get added to the existing PNR and if approved, you'll be charged the difference in points + 5k change fee.

This is often (always?) cheaper than a classic upgrade reward, can be processed well before the upgrade window, will earn Points Club SC at the higher class rate, and gets around the inability to limitation on upgrading from a business classic award to first.
