QFF Platinum requesting release of extra Classic Reward seats?

Yeah. The HBA staff was aware of it and unfortunately their team leader/manager said it wasn't permitted with QF33 because it's technically an international flight despite connecting to QF9. It makes sense. They could force a seat on any of the other flights but QF33 was a no go.
I should have been clearer - what I meant was, did you not want any of the domestic SYD-PER options with QF33 not available?

Ah yes. I did end up requesting QF655 arriving the night before QF9 and I'll get a full day's work in at PER rather than losing half the day to flying.

But seeing some of the comments above where I could potentially fly ahead, I might see if I could change it back to QF643 as there aren't any other options for the A332 on the 15/10.

Would there be any other strategies to try and get on QF33? I took Madrooster's comment about embargo meaning that no requests could be made for SYD-PER (QF33) at all so I guess there isn't any point in calling and requesting a change.

KangarooFlyer88 once managed to book a regular MEL-PER and then showed up to the F check-in at the international terminal and got moved onto QF9 when it was MEL-PER.

Yeah that's what I've read but there's a risking of being stuck on a 737 since the only A332 is in the morning and the next two flights to PER that day are on 737s.

In this instance your best bet would be to keep an eye out for QF33 to see if that becomes available either on day of travel to LHR or alternatively on the day before.

As mentioned earlier, you could always try and rock up to Sydney international around noon and see if First check in can switch you onto that. Again there is no guarantee they will do that. If they don't you'll end up spending more time at the airport waiting for your PER bound flight (thank goodness for lounge access). However, if they do then you'll have access to the far nicer F lounge plus a better on board service (plus arriving into PER sooner). It's a gamble here. You have to consider whether it is worth potentially spending some extra time at the airport for the opportunity to get onto that earlier flight with better lounge access and onboard service. Certainly for me, I'd look like a fool had I been turned away by First check in and my partner and I had to sit around the airport for an extra hour or two.

The domestic services have much better on time reliability, depends on how tight your schedule is if you miss the connection in PER

All a balance of needs and wants :)

  1. Arrive into PER on 14/10 on a A332. Full day's work then out to LHR on 15/10. (Current)
  2. Book the last permissible SYD-PER before QF33 for 15/10. Turn up to T1 and hope that QF lets me on QF33. Potentially a day's work wasted.
  3. Hope that somehow I can get QF33 added to QF9 despite it being incredibly unlikely
