When I took my LTG flight which was ADL MEL, I took boxes of chocolates with me (from a WW EDR special ) and I gave one of the boxes to the ADL QP staff to celebrate. They then came to see me later in the QP to offer me an upgrade. Trouble was, I was already in 2C
Anyway, my point is, if you are nice to them, you never know what they might be able to do. Just asking however is unlikely to do it IMO, no matter how polite you are.

Does one ask for an op-up or does it just happen as if by magic?
You do know what bribery is and how it is generally against the law.
When dealing with procurement areas in the Federal Public Service you are not able to give even a $6 box of chocolates at Christmas.......There is a total ban on gifts at any time of any value.I cannot see how this could be construed as bribery in the australian jurisdiction. Even if it was a government official, considering it was likely less than say 20 bucks, id be suprised if anyone saw it this way. And of you were qf, would you want one of your top tier to be embarresed because you didnt take a few chocolates?
hmmm maybe emirates is bribing me when they offer opups...

just an example of how a small gift in the Australian jurisdiction can be considered a bribe. Mind you there seems to be no problem with Qantas handing out CL memberships like confetti to senior public servants - one rule for the bosses another for the workersLucky QF isn't the Federal Public Service then
Can it even really be deemed an "op-up" if one has to ask for it?

I am not saying that bribery was intended when the chocolates were given but it ended up that way.
Obviously you missed the bit about how I was already in J. You might like to read posts properly next time before accusing someone of bribery.
I also acknowledge that you did not offer the chocolates to receive something in return.
it also mentions QC members, aka QP members can also ask.
