QR withholding award seats from Qantas?

I hate that you need to go though security again even when you are just transiting.
Pretty rare to not do that. SIN seems to be but you do it at the gate - which is actually a really good system to expedite transferring PAX.

But isn't this the case for many other airports including DXB (going through a central security screening) and SIN (screening at departure gate)?

I have noticed there are also hardly any business class seats being released on BA and VA as well for Qatar.........been like this the last 2 weeks for a year out...

I have found plenty of space, multiple seats to Europe on VA for later in the year. YMMV.

The only countries I transit are Singapore and Doha. I didn’t realize rescreening was the norm. SIN setup is much better than the pat down my wife normally gets in DOH.

I can’t think of any countries where you *don’t* clear security in international transit?

Even in Australia you have to do this. However, the queues are usually not that bad because most arriving passengers are ending their journey in Australia - not like in Qatar where you have many dozens of flights arriving around the same time and most pax are connecting.

I’ve not been through DOH since pre-Covid but the other PITA factor was the invariable bus transfer on arrival. However, that usually drops you off at the central screening point. But DXB and AUH are no better.

The hack in HKG was to be aware of what gate you’ve arrived at and study the terminal map for the various transfer screening points. Sometimes it makes sense to walk the opposite directions to the signs to the smaller quieter mid point screening points.

SIN (and anything similar) is usually good. Because you’re all queuing for the same flight.

Isn't the end of the calendar, on Virgin, currently around Christmas? It would be very unsurprising to find limited availability then.

This is the real reason for all the Doha issues imho. We happened to change planes mid day during our last QR trip (that was FRA-DOH and then DOH-BKG) and did hardly recognise the airport as it was close to empty. Unfortunately, connections from down here all seem to get you into the witches hours at DOH.

Also agree with the bus comment- such a big new airport and every second or so flight on their national airline (!!!) you end up at a bus gate.

Must say I've been loving this development. So much less competition for redemptions into and out of Australia now that Qantas FF members are out of the picture. Though I find the service to be a little too formal/deferential for my liking and the QSuite bed much harder than most competitors (and the headrest is in a really uncomfortable position for sleeping), it is head and shoulders above Qantas. Dine on demand alone makes it a winner. Plus only 90K Avios one way from Australia to Europe — what a bargain.

What's yourr strategy to accrue Avios here in Australia?

OT: I had it explained to me once - the country where you depart from is in effect certifying that you have been screened. This is why transit pax usually have to be screened so that the country of departure has confidence that you meet their standards.

Transit pax can be amalgamated on to a single flight from many different origins with many different, ahem, “standards” of screening.

Is that 90k using avios on the QR or BA website?

What do you find wrong with Hamad International airport ?

Do you find it clunky ?
I find the airport at Doha perfectly fine. A big plus is that the pharmac_ sells Melatonin 10mg over the counter. I also find it amusing that you have to be taken to a secret location in order to find the duty-free booze.

I'm confident I didn't have to go through transit security the last time I connected off an Australian flight. I think it's country dependant.
If you arrived at the right time it’s pretty quick and painless but DOH, AUH and DXB (and the rest of the world) have transit screening points. In DOH you exit just under the Al Mourjan lounge. Although there might be new points as part of the terminal expansion.

Can be booked via QR or BA (Avios are transferrable between them), but is bookable via BA:

Churning US credit cards.

Hey when you say 'churning us credit cards', do you mean being in the usa and churning cards over there or by churning cards like citi bank here in Australia and converting to Avios? thanks
