Booked MEL-KUL J on MH, KUL-DXB-FCO F on EK. All on QF points, all one e-ticket. I’m assuming that I’ll get an MH BP at MEL and then need to collect luggage and check in at a transit desk to get an EK BP as MH at MEL won’t check me all the way through. I’m also assuming I won’t need to go landside at KUL? Anyone done the same / similar connection before? Are my assumptions correct?

I would think your baggage should get checked through. Might need to get onward BPs in KUL however.

There is a short thread on this
I think @NoName eventually got flights on SQ-EK rather than MH-EK

MH and EK have a codeshare agreement and your itinerary is on one ticket.
Are your flights a MH/EK codeshare?

I had booked SIN-KUL-DXB on MH/EK. About 6hr before departure a seat on the direct EK SIN-DXB flight came up so I changed. So yes, I never got to find out for sure what the boarding pass and checked bag situation would have been.

am planning to travel via Thai airways -Bengaluru to Melbourne using krisflyrr miles . I note the taxes are approx A $500 . Also I can save approx A$300 on taxes by booking BLR -BKK through krisflyer and BKK -MEL via air Canada ( both on Thai airways ) . My question is can i check my bags all the way through in BLR ( interline ) and can I travel on 2 tickets via BKK ( Covid related ) ? TIA

Might be better to start this on a new thread under "Your Questions" or Thai airways. This post will be in the Malaysia Airlines thread and your questions is about Thai Airways
