I have no idea about the laws or anything so done shoot me. But perhaps the children didnt qualify. They had different last names so perhaps werent British (if the episode said they were i dont remember since it was a while ago). Maybe she was fine and they or one of them were not. As Australian's can we just go live and work in the UK permanently or do we need to apply?
The right of abode will be noted in a British passport. This quote is taken from their "Am I a citizen" website:
"Right of abode means you have the right to live and work in the UK without any immigration restrictions.
This information should be shown in your passport."
As I understand it, holding a UK passport, may not confer the right to work - only to come and go as you please. And the rules depend heavily on whether you were born before 1st Jan 1983.
And as said further up, the children of a British passport holder will not automatically have a right of abode. My daughters had to apply for ancestry visas, as their mother holds a British passport but was born outside the UK. Because my wife was born before 1/1/83, and her father had right of abode, then she is automatically a citizen. However, our daughters would not have had the opportunities to work beyond the normal 2 year reciprocal arrangements had they not applied for ancestry visa's first, had an established UK bank account, and applied for and received a national Insurance number. They were then able to gain a normal full time job.
Once having completed their 6 year apprenticeship on the ancestry visa, they would then receive the right of abode, no longer need the ancestry visa, and would have the ability to apply for citizenship and ultimately obtain a passport - which one did.
