I have never been to Adelaide and would like to justify heading there as a 48 hours stop-over before handing home to Sydney.
Other than the wine/work, why would you want to go to Adelaide?

Its a very pleasant urban environment. Lots of green space to walk around in, colonial buildings to admire, a decent museum etc. Adelaide Oval tour well worth doing. A drive up to Mt Lofty is worth doing too and beyond that but not too far away is Handorf.

You can also admire their multi-billion dollar new hospital and so when you get back home, be relieved that your health system isn't so bad after all :)

I reckon ... hire a convertible Mustang from Hertz, and tour the nearby wine-regions with the overnight-stay being at a place that has a good restaurant which uses local produce.

I have just returned from 4 days in Adelaide and the Barossa. I certainly recommend a 48 hour stopover. 24 hours is not enough and wont give you the feel of the city. I totally concur with Rooflyer's comments.
Adelaide is a great city for food and wine, so check out some restaurants. The main city block is great for walking, plus has a useful tram. Tram is also good to go to the beach at Glenelg. Adelaide is great for seafood and oysters, try Cardone's in Glenelg. Adelaide Market is also well worth a visit.

If you wish to go outside Adelaide, Mt Lofty, Hahndorf, McLaren Vale, and Barossa are all within 90 minutes drive.

The best pizzas and wood oven cooking in Adelaide is of course is at my house :p

But failing that there is any number of wonderful places to visit for food and wine in the CBD and North Adelaide. Adelaide has changed so much in the last five or so years since forward thinking people were elected to the City Council, so many more small eateries that it's difficult to keep up with them all.

The Clare Valley is stunning (but I'm not sure how reachable it is) . We loved McLaren Vale, you could just about grab a handful of grapes out of the window the vines are so close. It's a beautiful, walkable city and environs. Houses in that Mt Gambier stone are gorgeous.

Is there a way to get up to Mt Lofty without driving?
Yes there is a public bus up there

You can also get a public bus to Hahndorf.

I know I'm being slightly pedantic but there are a number of spelling errors in previous posts eg Hahndorf Peninsula ;)

If you are into Art Galleries I think ours is pretty good.

The Mortlock Library is rated one of the top in the world for being pretty

Thanks everyone. A lot more information than I expected. I am more into the nature type of things rather than winery.

Then off to Cleland and stop at Mt Lofty for the view over Adelaide. It’s also on the way to Hahndorf.

The Botanic Gardens are a nice spot to walk around and you can also get a public bus to the Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens.
