Red Bull Air Race to Albert Park?

VICTORIA'S Major Events chiefs have a high-thrills air race over Albert Park in their sights.


Talks are under way to hold a Red Bull Air Race - dubbed the "Formula One of the skies" - in 2014.


The global series sees pilots race against the clock through slalom-style inflatable air gates and pylons.


The Herald Sun understands the State Government, the Victorian Major Events Company, Grand Prix bosses and Red Bull chiefs have been involved in talks.


If the plan went ahead, the air race would not piggy-back on the March Grand Prix and would likely be held later in the year, sources said.

Will be interesting to see if they actually get it in Melbourne. It was announced a while back that the race would take 2013 off as well.

Mind you Perth was a wonderful venue for it...

Will be interesting to see if they actually get it in Melbourne. It was announced a while back that the race would take 2013 off as well.

Mind you Perth was a wonderful venue for it...

I agree the Swann provides a great venue, it's a shame Perth doesn't with their over priced everything. Melbourne would be a great venue IMHO and the organizers would see a decent ROI IMHO. Melbourne is accessible as proven time and time again with any number of public attended events.

BNE along the river would be another better contender than WA but again, BNE prices itself out of the market with most things as well.

Both would not suit simply because of the need to put a temporary strip near the course, not possible in either city AFAIK.

Melbourne proudly holds the title as the Major Events Capital of Australia for good reason - they know how to hold these events and do them well. I imagine compared to the GP there wouldn't be that much set-up costs because it mostly takes place in the air?

Agree it would be incredible around Sydney harbour - the images would be spectacular and it could be one of the big tourist events of the year. If Melbourne had this issue of nowhere for a temporary airstrip they would think outside the square and do something like float a temporary one over water or something. I'm still impressed by how they hosted the world swimming championships by simply building a pool on the Australian Open centre court!

So that leaves Brisbane as the best location then . I would love to see it over Bramble Bay using Redcliffe aerodrome as the strip.

Would Point Cook be viable for Melbourne to use?

There's always the start finish straight of the F1 GP

...... and by having other cities host the events successfully for years, then throw bucketloads of cash to the event owners to get them to move it to Melbourne......

The F1 straight might work as others have said? If not they could close part of Beaconsfield Parade and that would work well.

It will definitely not be coming back to Perth so this is good news indeed. I recall hearing something about docklands in the past, but Albert Park is a great idea.

As a general comment I'm really glad to hear the RBAR is likely coming back - I've actually been missing it. Read something about Paul Bonhomme (who is a BA 747 Captain on other days) only last month in the OpenSkies BA magazine.

Apparently the current premier declared when in opposition in 2009 that if elected, his government would 'get' the Red Bull race, and locate it in Geelong! So I wonder if Geelong residents are a little miffed at this rethink.

Tall poppy syndrome... what is there, 2 hotels, 1 pub and 15 horses in Geelong (and a coughpy footy team! *grin*)?

Small thinking if they do that, to attract crowds, this type of event needs to be in a major city - that's why the F1 isn't in Geelong, and the AFL and NRL grand finals, or the ashes etc...

Does the air race have to be over water?
