RedQ or Red Herring?

who's suggesting that?

wilco.

I actually really dislike how AA make announcements in Spanish. If you live in an english speaking country, you ought to speak english. Its YOUR responsibility to know the official language of the country in which you reside. Whats next? Safety announcements in 50 languages to cater to every minority group? Give me a break.

I suggested that on other carriers they do safety announcements in multiple languages including english which would not be the official language of the carrier.

I thin the situation is quite different in the USA where in some states the official language might be English but Spanish is the language primarily spoken and I don't think it is culturally sensitive to be angry with an airline who are actually sensitive to that.

That is a very fair call......But having said that, why is it always that "cultural sensitivity" is a one way st?? For example, the Burqa issue in France. France has to respect the burqa, but the burqa wearing population doesnt need to respect the french majority who dont accept it. Good on France for sticking up for themselves and their national idetity. Im a bit over this whole "PC" business to be honest....

And finally just for the record English is not the official language of the USA. The USA has no official language.

I don't like to cite wikipedia as a source given the risk of inaccuracy but at this point it will do.

Now getting back to the topic of RedQ....

Not quite. Im suggesting that it would be absurd to make chinese announcements and not that it should be done.

what part of "english is the official language of aviation" do you not quite understand??

I recall SK making an english announcement on a flight from CPH to ATH despite there seemingly being no other reason to do so.

Actually that refers to pilots, I don't believe that refers to cabin announcements.

Despite acknowledging the risk of inaccuracy, you go ahead and quote it anyway because it suits your argument??

The US government communicates in english, the constitution is written in english and even postage stamps are printed in english, so for all intents and purposes, English is the "official" language wether it is officially proclaimed to be or not.

The day QF makes domestic announcements in a foreign language, New Zealandish included, is the day I stop flying them.

I never said that every airline on earth needs to make cabin announcements in english......It was someone else who suggested that an airline should be praised for doing so, despite english not being their primary language.

no but you pointed out that English is the aviation language (which yes it is) however I was referring that it is for pilots.. Cabin announcements aren't part of that.

To continue the (my) NQR theme, I am going to submit that this AFR article:

Qantas Asia plan under threat

was not yet meant for public consumption due to the failure of Qantas to inform the ASX of their decision. The journalist was fed the info by Qantas insiders (mgt) but he was not yet supposed to print. Maybe the lure of the scoop was too strong.

And this article from sister paper, The Age:
Joyce burrows away quietly to get into Asia

seems to be a very rushed retrospect attempt by the journalist (via his colleague) to put the cat back in the bag.........at least until the disclosure to the ASX is made. Fairfax must have really hung their source out to dry, so needed to quickly make amends.

Twice now AJ's team has made this bungle (if it is indeed a bungle). They also did it when they did not disclose that they were going to shut down the airline. The rules regarding ASX disclosure for Qantas must really irritate AJ.

The "bungle" as you put it is only your opinion, many think grounding was a bold move which has ended action and put it into arbitration.

And your evidence for this theory is ........... ??

  1. The presence of 2 completely contradictory articles from the same news organization written 12 hours apart; both sourced from the same Qantas Management.
  2. The complete absence of a retraction/correction from the AFR journalist
  3. A strange disturbance in The Force

i'd say point 1 is more of a blight on Fairfax. you don't know what information (if anything reliable was given). It wouldn't be the first time wrong information was given out to a journalist that was later published and found to be wrong.

The bungle to which I refer is not the grounding of the airline, but the lack of prior disclosure required to be given to the ASX regarding the grounding.

By the way, and this is to both yourself and JohnPhelan, everything posted on this entire forum is somebody's opinion. Shocking, but true (the last phrase wasn't an opinion, just in case you were wondering).

Now I'll give you another example to do for homework. If I state that saying "For Christ's sake" is not blasphemy (if you in fact do not believe in God), is that a fact or an opinion?
