I am impressed!

When I tell people about miles, they are like too hard / I would rather fly Air Asia X

Okaaiieee
It is too hard. I'd like to travel to Thailand with wife and daughter in April and use Qantas points. Prefer economy. Only just confirmed travel dates, could not confirm any earlier.

If you can play the game and plan 11 months ahead then good luck to you.

You don't always have to plan that far ahead, although knowing what you would like to do and when you can get time off certainly helps, as does travelling alone rather than a bunch of friends who can never get their ducks lines up....

Last year for the July school holidays I decided to take my young one up to Bangkok from Perth only about a month before and it took a bit of playing around and award seats were sometime disappearing as I was mulling over dates, but I got us economy SQ flights up using VA and business class SQ flights back using KF and the $ outlay was only like about $250 or so from memory where cash flights that close to departure even on LCCs were going to come to $1000 or more...

I thought I saw something that said the charge cap of 300k points before reduced rates applied, was being abolished. Can't find anymore, can anyone confirm?

There also seems to be no mention of the companion card on the Amex site for the charge card anymore, does this still exist post the restructuring of the product that increased the annual fee to $1450?

Minor point but I believe the fee increase was independent of the devaluation as it was announced and implemented some months ago.

The Reserve companion card still exists and provides an extra $400 travel credit so is worth it for sure. The best way to apply, if you are interested, is to ring Amex and get them to post or email you out an application form.

Is it really worth it? I was wondering. For the money spent on the annual fee of Amex Platinum Charge, you can fly to Europe return every year and still have some money left in your pocket.
Apart from that, Amex travel credit is worth about half in a real life.
Recently I was trying to arrange a car rental booking in Barcelona in July this year using Amex travel credit. The cheapest option for 2 weeks rental (insurance and unlimited km included) was AUD 435. A few minutes later I found at least three different options asking between AUD 216 to AUD 265 for exactly the same car model with all inclusions.
Included travel insurance? Voted as one of the worst around. Many bank-issued Platinum Visa or Mastercard accounts offering travel insurance protects you way better.
I am sorry but in my opinion, there is no justification for spending almost AUD 1.5K for a credit card just for the sake of having it.

I’ve found price competitiveness for Amex travel variable but was looking for a specific hotel and it was much cheaper. I think it’s not always the cheapest have to do your homework. Depending on the time it takes might exceed the value of the credit depending on how much you value your time.

Thanks, already have it but just hadn’t seen any references to it in the features listed for charge.

I’ve had no issue using the credit for flights, they were always same price as on the airlines own sites excepting the inabily to apply promo codes

That question must be asked by every cardholders or potential cardholders of themselves and themselves only.

No 2 people have exactly same set of circumstances, wants, needs and desires. One size does not fit all. I personally questioned the value of Plat Charge at $1,450 after the NSW Law Society $800 tie up ceased - I was set to close Plat as the ONLY value to me was the travel credits with Plat and Reserve - even then the sums didn't add up.

Then along comes a method to virtually double MR pts - voila I will now keep the card - we are ALL different - I can now answer to myself - YES Plat is now worth it.

NOTE: I will not disclose this method here - RTFF - all the info is there - or come along to a MEL AFF Members get together and info exchange face to face - but NEVER on an open forum - again - it's all in this forum if you read widely enough.

EDIT: And please do not PM me re this matter as they will be ignored

Will need to look into this as I just had my edge account review knocked back for double points

Had put thru over 1mil spend this year. Even offered to apply for a plat charge if gurantee double points. Still no

Points are always earn and burn. Dont store them. The only reason I would apply for a charge is to take advantage of the double points for the Marriott transfer
