Rejected Application

I applied for my CPA AMEX Gold, and was staying at my prev address for only a few mths., so I guess the rules might be slightly different for CPA/CA and cards for lawyers and engineers.

I also applied for my AMEX Platinum Credit Card only a few months after etting my AMEXX Gold card. It was approved, no problems.

I think it should be easy for people on the ca/cpa/lawsoc etc gold cards to move to the platinum cards. i couldn't have imagined the gold being very profitable for amex. amex wants more annual fee revenue.

i'm seeing a lot more platinum credit cards these days. dammit. i'm never going to get that free qantas flight :(

I know that Amex did a "baycorp" check on me before converting my Amex Gold (Perfect record) to a Plat.

I meet the "no credit apps" and "stable address" rules.

Then again, all they really asked me was my annual income.

After all that they shafted me on the credit limit. Never realised how much of a risk I was to credit card companies!!

REJECTED FOR AMEX PLATINUM CARD....

Can't beat 'em.....
How many other "credit" application have you made in the last 1, 2 and 3 years? This can play a factor in their decision process.

Think NM and others have a very valid point. Would like to know the process to...

22 yrs of age.
Four and a half years of credit card use.
Last application for credit: 2003/4
Income: (05/06) about $50k (dont tell AMEX)

Approved for Platinum Credit Card.

Plat Credit Card and Plat Card are 2 very different things!!!

I keep getting offered bigger and bigger credit limits. I never realised how much of risk the credit card companies are to me!!

had u ever had any previous relationship with amex previously? ever had a card with them before. if yes, then u have had an existing/previous relationship.

if not, then i believe you must have scored well (little risk) in nearly ever other regard.

CBA Visa and CBA Mastercard keep offering to increase my already huge credit limit even higher and I have wisely refused them.

I have only recently realised how much of a credit risk I am to me!!!!

And I've known for a while how much of credit risk Mrs NM is to me   .

Hey guys... going back to the rejection issue.
AMEX can decline an application for ANYTHING, even for the tiniest things. EG: wrong number, not providing full details of 'friend or relative', not having a home phone, etc.

I think your request for a third Amex heavily contributed to your rejected application.

If, for example, you have applied for 5 credit cards in the last 12 months, with an average credit limit of $10,000 each, Amex will see that as a potential debt of $50,000 and may be questioning your ability to service such a

This is precisely why you were rejected - before they even got to the rest of the smaller things (age/income). I work in a financial institution, the FIRST thing they all do is go to 'worst case' scenario - and assume you max out ALL the cards they found you have (not just the ones you put on your application). Then they calculate your ability to service such a debt. It does not matter if you 'intend' to cancel the cards - if they are active at the time of application they are counted.

Gordon, have a look at my post dated 25 Feb 2006 13:04. Specifically * points 3 and 4. That's why you were rejected (together with the "casual" income. Their credit risk assessment said "No way".

If you were a financial institution, responsible to your shareholders for making a profit) give credit to a person like you described??

ME....

46 yrs of age.
Over twenty five years of 'credit card use'.
Current mortgage.
Income: (05 / 06) about $150,000. - $200,000. (however, 'casual')

REJECTED FOR AMEX PLATINUM CARD....

I'm thinking of applying for this, how do you fancy my chances?

Married, 46 years old
Own at least 80% equity in our home, lived there since 2001
My income was just barely over 40k because I got an ETP last year. I have been working for the same temp agency since Oct 2005.
3 credit cards-2 with NAB-Visa & Amex, Virgin Mastercard. I rarely use the Virgin one, I only got it because it was free, I think Sept last year. It was before I lost my permanent job. Ditto the Amex.
I always pay the cards in full monthly, there has only been maybe 3 times in the last 5 years I haven't done so because I went crazy while on holiday. Even then, I never missed a payment and paid them off within a couple months.
No other loans or debts.

I guess what worries me is that my income is on the low side, just barely over the minimum required for the Amex Gold Rewards Maximizer (website says 40k minimum), and the fact that I am a temp. The document I would submit for income is my 2005-2006 tax assessment. So do you think I would get it? Should I wait until Sept to apply because it will be one year since I applied for any credit cards. I didn't really apply, they sent me free ones in the mail.

The reason I want this card is to get the points transferred to Priority Club and get free hotels in Tahiti. It pays 1.5 points per $ and transfers 1000=PC 600.

Did the on-line application a week ago.

I'm 50-ish. Divorced.
No real assets (car and super).
Been renting for 8 years.
Same employer for 7 years.
Two credit cards ($20,000 limit in total - pay off every month)

Got a letter today. Approved (subject to identity check).
Given the advice around here, I wasn't confident. But hopeful.

Waiting now to see what limit they offer!

I'm in my late 20's. Have a mortgage that I'm well ahead of, a decent lot of shares invested, and a reliable job that pays a moderate amount (circa 70K).

Yet even I baulk at the 8k limit my Amex has. I have it through a affiliation I'm a mmber of so there ar eno annual fees and thats the main reason I use my Amex. I enjoy being given credit, then not paying any interest on it (thank you financial institution), however as Amex is not accepted everywhere, I still keep a CBA Visa just in case.

I don't know why on earth you'd want 5 different credit cards, it sounds extremely dodgy to say the least.

OK, I bit the bullet and applied online, mainly because I might be changing jobs in the near future so it's best to do it now. If I get it, great! If not NAB will convert my existing Amex to the Qantas one no hassles. But since I don't collect Qantas, I would have to find someone willing to swap them for PC points. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it!

I applied for an AMEX credit card when I only had 3 months of full time employment. I got it without any problem. I was in my early twenties with no asset (apart from a car). I had never missed a payment and only after a year, They send me a pre-approved Gold credit card application and got my gold credit card. two years after that they send me a pre-approved application for the gold charge card. I got it no problem. 2 years ago, I was invited to apply for Platinum Charge card. Got one issued within a week. They also provide me a free platinum credit card. I also give plat charge supl card to my GF. I have been with AMEX since 1998. Never missed a beat in my payment and had a good history and relationship with them. When I got my platinum charge card, I was only on a modest income of 70K. I don't even qualify for any other platinum credit card which need higher income. Having a good history with AMEX does help. Now I am on 100k plus and have good history with AMEX. Hopefully I will get invited to join Centurium card one day

OMG!! Guess what showed up in my letterbox? A brand new shiny Gold Rewards Maximizer card! I'm in shock!!! Tahiti Intercontinental, here we come! :D OK, so they only gave me $3500 limit but when I want to buy the RTW tickets on AA next year, I can just put extra money on it so it doesn't bounce, right?

That is sad. Just as well you had a backup plan.

Considering that it is a credit card and you only have $3,500 credit limit they would not want to see an $8,000 or $10,000 transaction on it even if you have put the funds in there. But who knows, stanger things have happened.

The minimum limits for gold cards keep decreasing. Before Platinum cards, the minimum credit limit for a gold card was usually around $10,000. Then with Platinum cards, Gold card minimum credit limits came down to around $5000. Now it seems they are down to $3500 or less.

They will need to think of a new card higher than Platinum if the trend keeps continuing.
