OMG!! Guess what showed up in my letterbox? A brand new shiny Gold Rewards Maximizer card! I'm in shock!!! Tahiti Intercontinental, here we come! :D OK, so they only gave me $3500 limit but when I want to buy the RTW tickets on AA next year, I can just put extra money on it so it doesn't bounce, right?

With a regular bank (NAB, CBA, ANZ, Westpac etc.), I would say there would be no problem in topping up your card sometimes, providing most of the time you use the card as a normal credit card. But with Amex, they seem to make rules as they go, and watch accounts more carefully.

When I started out in business, I had a card with a low limit (I think $5000), and I always had plenty of funds on it, as I was making purchases of up to $50,000 and monthly purchases of up to $300,000. The bank did not seem to care.

Don't assume you can do that. Many card providers, and I believe Amex is one of them, still have a single transaction limit set to your credit limit. So even if you pre-pay $3000 into your card, you cannot make a single transaction of more than your $3500 limit.

So you may need to have the travel agent bill you in two separate transactions, each being less than $3500. Otherwise you may need to call Amex first to make a special arrangement with them.

NM, I rang them and they said I could pay partially, do a Bpay transfer to pay it off, then pay the balance. I would probably have to pay a deposit on booking anyway. Or I could ask them to temporarily lift the limits but this would be a pain in the butt. I bet you within a year they increase it automatically anyway.

For normal living expenses, the limit is fine, I don't spend that in one month excpet for one off stuff-tickets, new laptop, dvd, stuff like that.

Last year as a Platinum AMEX holder, I rang AMEX before I went to Hawaii telling them that I could have a large bill for hospitality in a single transaction ( US10K).
They put me on hold for about 20 seconds and said that this was no problem and thanked me for the communication. In the end,I didn't need to use my Card as someone else picked up the bill :D
Good communication, in my experience , leads to no embarrassing moments.
If you are not regularly using a credit card then you should cancel it.
Keep the better ones. I only have 2.
If you are not a property owner then this may have been part of your assessment.

Yes, I am a property owner-just our house though-80% equity. I WISH someone else would pick up the tab. Very unlikely in my case!
