Ok here's my update of my request....
requested 3 seats BNE-DFW and LAX-BNE in J and PE -CSR sent request and while on phone took other deatils from me. 5-10 mins later she advised come back not successful . ok i thought, i was sort of expecting that. Economy it is.

She asked if I had any other routing I wanted to try so I tried BNE-LAX and SYD-LAX and returns for both PE and J. She advised I should call back in morning as an analyst may look at it. I thought ok, and waited.

called back around 11am and was told that SYD-LAX in J confirmed. No return in anything other than economy. I thought that was a pretty good score but I needed to rejig a few things with our itinerary as it was based on landing in DFW. She said I had till end of day to accept J outbound seats. Thought about it and was going to accept, called up and got the lovely Sophie, was told that BNE-LAX was confirmed. Woohoo I thought. Still nothing return in anything higher than Y. Had Sophie check a cpl of diff days for PE or J but still nothing. Finally asked her to check DFW-BNE in PE and J. Got confirmation for 3x PE return for return home.

very happy with this outcome. We have to rejig a few things with our itinerary but its all doable. I'm still going to try for J return from LAX in a week or so. I know it will cost me some cancellation points, but I won't mind if we can get J.

Well done. I love the DFW-BNE flight - it's 16 hours, so you get to have dinner, watch a couple of films, get 8 hours sleep, and still wake up in time to have a leisurely breakfast before landing!

QF8 is actually my favourite QF flight.

thanks JohnPhelan. I was stoked..so was MrsZim, not the mention the 10yo tyke. Will be a very nice start to the holiday. I was a bit dejected yesterday thinking even with my WP status I still couldn't muster anything better than Y, so today has been a very good day!!

Not sure on seating, but I I'll take that up on a new thread to not hijack this one. here : http://www.australianfrequentflyer....-seat-selection-bne-lax-53386.html#post887872

How long does it normally take for QF to deduct the points from your account? I thought it would have been pretty much straight away, but a few days in and balance still very healthy.

Taken 1 week for me before, not sure why.

Do I detect a hint of nervousness that your wonderful success may have been something you dreamed? :p.

JohnM had I not spoken to QF today your post would have sent me into a paranoia tailspin! ..I don't want to say to much just yet and tempt the Frequent Flyer gremlins, but I may have an even better outcome to post about tomorrow....say tuned!

Well here's the story..... I called up yesterday to see if I could get LAX to BNE or SYD in J to replace my DFW BNE in PE. tried three dates, BNE all failed, SYD date 1 & 2 failed , but date 3 came back confirmed, with connection back to BNE all in J..wow i said.

Prepared for the change fee of 3500 points per person. I was a little short so I needed to buy a few thousand to top up, which I was fine with. But the CSR said I had more than enough, but I advised that the previous booking hadn't had the points deducted yet. she couldn't understand why, but at the end of the day she said this would work in my favour as because it hadn't actually been ticketed I would not be charged the change fee. BUT then she said she had to go for the day and she would finish it off in the morning and called me back. I was a bit concerned thinking this could go pear shaped really quickly and there goes my seats....

To her credit I got a call Friday morning everything confirmed, no cancellation fee points deducted tickets issued.

So now I have BNE - LAX J Class - upper deck chosen ; LAX-SYD ( A380) J class haven't selected seats yet , and then connection to BNE in J also.

very happy camper. bug thanks to Maureen from Melbourne premium desk

On fairly short notice have decided Paddy Jnr2, who is finishing Uni, and I, should have a celebratory road trip before he's off to conquer the world.
Paddy Jnr2's a mad coughnal supporter so an obvious use of points would be to be off to the UK for a couple of weeks.

I thought it was an extraordinary bit of fortune to score 2 F Awards on QF & EK to get there, but getting back was more problematic.
Via AA I nabbed an F Aaward ticket on QF2.

I then called the Premium Desk this morning, speaking a cheerful and professional Caroline who put the request through to Yield Mgmt and lo and behold a J Award seat was released!

Sent a "Thank You" PM to Red Roo, and thanks for the stars aligning with QF, EK and AA!

The (non-guaranteed) release of Award Seats for a WP is a wonderful benefit when it works out, and I find the Premium Desk staff always helpful.

couldn't agree more!

sorry if a stupid questions - when you booked AA, does that mean you used AA reward miles?

Today I rang trying to get J/ F from the US to here. And successfully had an F seat released for classic award on QF12, for 2 weeks' time. Loads apparently heavy, Anna at Premium wasn't holding out much hope for me. I was on hold for a few minutes. Came back with J to MEL, F to SYD. Following day there were 4 choices of J & 1 in F.

Took maybe 10 minutes all up. Very nice. My first use of this benefit.

Out of curiosity, what was the point cost for the F ticket lax - syd?

I was looking for classic awards for JASA availability at T-353 yesterday between LHR and SYD and came across BA283 LHR-LAX (BA A380) followed by QF12 LAX-SYD (QF A380). 35 hours duration with a circa 9 hour connection in LAX (not fun). No sign of it. I did not pay enough attention to points requirement etc. as I intended looking into this further this evening. Not something I would particularly like to do regularly but a once off for comparison would be good. I will now be keeping my eyes open for the BA/QF A380 option via HKG (BA25/QF128). Fingers crossed!

Not a stupid question at all.
Used AA Miles to get a First Class Classic award on QF - in fact put the award booking on hold until I got confirmation I could get Paddy Jnr a freed up Business Class award on the same flight.
Strangely the First Class Award was showing up on AA but NOT QF

hi all

i used this (non-guaranteed) benefit last night.

absolutely amazed!

picked up SYD - HKG in F between xmas and NYE
and BKK - SYD in J in the first week on January

There are obviously no awards available during this time this late in the year and I got my preferred class and dates.
This experience has seriously brought me back on board with QF.

I have tried for 2 J seats from DXB to LHR in February and have not had any success. I didn't know you could also ask for F - it certainly wasn't suggested to me.

Has anyone had any luck asking for EK seats to be released? I ask as there seems to be a lot of 1 seat only availability for EK F (I was looking MEL-SIN for June 2014) and was looking for both the gentleman and myself.

Again it seems as though it is non-guaranteed and has to go through a request process but I managed it today for a Y PER-DRW (return flight had Classic availability) flying out next Fri for Miss 11 and I. All so we can touch the 2013 AFL Premiership Cup!

I was told by QF that they can only ask for seats to be released on QF operated flights, as I also tried to get an extra seat on EK.
