Retaining points

The transfer method is probably the best suggestion. The Qantas toolbar is a good one as well.

Another idea could be to make a small purchase through each account on the Qantas Online Mall, earning points and therefore keeping the rest alive. You can earn points for purchases you would be making anyway, e.g. with eBay, David Jones or even for buying iTunes vouchers.

Another option is to go out for a meal. Restaurant bookings made through the Qantas portal earn 100 points per diner: http://restaurants.qantaspoints.com

Hmm, so can toolbar searches be automated?

I think the toolbar is designed to pick up if a robot is making searches, and not award points if it thinks this is the case. Anyway, you can only earn up to 150 points per month (per account). It usually only takes me a few minutes to reach my monthly maximum number of searches manually.

You may be right but all these a few minutes here and a few minutes there do add up. I though the search did check for repeated searches but if you changed what you were searching for it might not pickup.

As suggested earlier in the thread, perhaps look at the Online Mall. This would keep the accounts open and save you having to reopen accounts later down the track if required.

The circular transfer mehtod is obviously best.
With any other method you still have points in an account where you don't want them and you're just kicking the problem down the road.
In fact you're making the problem worse by putting more points where you don't want them.

We have two grandchildren with QFF accounts we control ( the parents fly cheap on VA due to a family connection). Anyway, we transfer any points out of their account to Mrs GPH (she is the Guardian of points). If we need or want to use points for travel for them, I use mine.

That's the point of children. Plus mine are competitive: "Child A has more points than you, better do some searches to catch up". Child B "give me that computer".

no it cant be.. but with school work.. easy to earn at least 1 point a month per child!! and even I don't go to school anymore.. and I still earn points too! :)

Probably a dumb question/comment (and one which won't assist with kids points) but I thought that QF cc (Amex) points accrued - not shopping through the online mall - kept the a/c active? I'm relying on that to keep my 300K points active as I now prefer to fly VA but don't want to lose the QF points!

Any earn, or burn, will keep the points alive.

The original mention the email advised an 18 month expiry date for QFF and VA. Not true for VA according to the T&Cs.:

9.9 Expiry of Points due to Inactivity
9.9.1 If a Member’s Membership Account is inactive for 36 consecutive months the Member’s Points will expire. This will occur if the Member has not earned, redeemed, or transferred Points to or from their Membership Account for a period of 36 consecutive months and if the Member is not participating (as a Contributing Account or Beneficiary Account) in a Family Pool. Expiry of Points will not affect the Member’s Membership Account.
9.9.2 VRPL will use reasonable endeavours to provide the Member with written notification that their Membership Account has been inactive and that the Member’s Points will expire shortly, before the Points expire due to inactivity.
9.9.3 The Member’s Points will not expire if they earn, redeem or transfer any Points to or from their Membership Account at any time during the consecutive 36 month period, or if they are participating in a family pool.

In the original emails we got for our Frequent Flyer account they would tell us how many points we had, and when they would expire. This suddenly stopped at one point and we forgot the date. We were accumulating points for a trip to Europe and then suddenly all the points disappeared. We were told that the points had expired and there was nothing that could be done. Qantas and us batted backwards and forwards for a few months, and they didn't budge, until I checked some of my old emails and started raising the fact they used to tell us when the date would expire and had now removed this service. We were given back our points but had to have everything booked in a week. We went forward as far as we could and then spent a frantic week sorting out our itinerary and booking everything we could. It was a really great trip but we now keep an eagle eye on expiry dates.

Yours must be young...

Try that with an older child and you would just get a look of blank amazement that you want them to do what...

the younger one is the motivator at 12 years old. It is all about rivalry between them. I'm just innocently letting them know who has more points. ;)

I got a Woolies card in my daughter's name. Linked it to QFF for free & made sure I did a purchase with her card once a year.

She was over in Canada so this has retained her points.

Not it sure what the new card rules are after the December change - she flies back tonight so it is now her problem again
