Return to Europe (in style)

There was a stylish-looking pub restaurant next door Yorkshire Bar and Grill, that I walked into in early without a booking - and discovered it was part of the hotel!

I give up. Just gimme mushrooms on toast again and the lamb pie. Not a patch on Tankerville, snabbu!

Something Qantas might serve up?

Next day - it poured!! Nevertheless, I headed up for Holy Island hoping there would be breaks in the rain.

Nope. To get to Holy Island you have to cross (and get back) at low tide across a causeway. I had perfect timing, but it just kept raining and blowing.

Off to York :( Plans to look at Thirsk and Whitby also given up. Complete day wiped out.
What, coming from Tassie and complaining about the weather! :-)

That was one thing MrsK liked about the UK - that you could order wine as small, medium or large pours... not that there ever a choice in what to order for her.

I'm glad to see you got up that way. Dad's dad came from Sunderland and grew up in Middlesbrough, so I've spent a bit of time up that way to research family history, and catch up with some 2nd cousins.

Sorry, bit OT:
My Dad's side of the family are from Leeds and Middlesbrough, now living in Brotton, Guisborough and Redcar. We've done the tree back to 1520 on his side.
I'm a life-long Boro supporter. We may be related!

It may well be, but not for the reason you may think. My great-great-grandfather was a Master Mariner (Captain) and sailed the seven seas, and from what I've found left his family in a Sunderland and married a couple more times in Australia and maybe an extra one in New Zealand. I do have some second cousins in Middlesbrough, one in Macclesfield and more down south. There's lots of us around. I'll message you my real name so we can check.

The next morning, I visited York Minster. 'Minster' is a term applied to any large church attached to a monastery and usually gets supersceded by 'cathedral', but has hung on at York.

With the encroaching town and trees, its hard to get an overall impression of the size from the outside, but I pinched this from Wikipedia.

As we've seen before, a church was erected on the site of the cathedral in the Middle Ages - the 600s in this case. Various structures came and went. The one existing when William the Conqueror invaded after 1066 was damaged, but repaired by the first Norman Bishop. The Vikings destroyed that one, and it was rebuilt. More subsequent damage and rebuilding, until the present structure was beg8un in 1220. Building continued for several centuries. Damage and looting occurred in the Reformation, including under QEI.

In the 1960s it was found that the central tower was in danger of collapse, so a massive reinforcement of the foundations by concrete and steel rod pinning was undertaken. During the excavations for this, much evidence of the very early structures etc was found. A fire in 1984 caused by lightning damaged the south transept, including the stained glass window.

A few views around the Cathedral today:

Good pics.. maintaining the standard..
We had a good look around the York minster in the late 80's as we were visiting friends nearby .
Sadly time has erased the memories…..

I took an identical photo of QE2 😜.

I also went inside for Sunday Evensong which was nice but the usual choir was still on Easter break so they had some ring-in choir from Nottingham who weren’t fabulous. Good but not fabulous. I don’t think they were used to a tourist congregation either! I heard several of them say ‘look at all the people’ 😂

Did you go to Jorvik Viking Centre?

I lined up in the freezing cold for half an hour before they opened the doors but at least I got in. More Disneyfied than I had expected. But still pretty interesting.

I actually really enjoyed and found it interesting even though it is a bit Disneyfied. It was funny working out which were the puppets and which was a real person
