Rex to fly between Australian capital cities

FlyPelican did try NTL-ADL through a Alliance wetlease for a short period ;)

I think Rex could give SYD-WTB a good go on their SAAB fleet. QF at one stage had double daily from SYD-WTB which for some unexplainable reason never returned post covid.

Yes, and Rex already do operate out of (or rather via) WTB. But I am pretty sure if they started the route using their Saab fleet, it would only be a matter of weeks, if not days, before QF returned to the route.

Heavily subsidised by the Queensland Government.

True, as were the same services operated by other carriers, before Rex won the contract. But the point was they already have arrangements in place for ground handling there, easier to start than a new port entirely. But anyway not going to happen, even on Saabs. My post was being a bit flippant.

Looks like the Golden Goose route (ADL-MEL) has quickly dried up. This mornings ADL-MEL had just 8 in Economy.

@Rex my offer from this morning still stands, I'm still happy to assist with marketing a BNE-SYD or BNE-CNS if needed route (I can share with my three Twitter followers, which might just have a larger reach than rex's other marketing attempts).

As a side note, QF canceled their ADL-MEL this morning whilst VA appears to have had about 90 people on their morning ADL-MEL flight.

The seven day lockdown must be set to cost REX anything from many hundreds of thousands of dollars to a small number of millions, with QFd and VAd affected far more heavily costs-wise. MEL is such a major airport if it stops, at least 35 per cent of passengers are affected.

A very big difference is that even though QF/VA are canceling flights the most people will likely get back is a credit however Rex promised full cash refunds in the event of a COVID disruption.

Don't know if it'll be that much though because on some flights $39 x 0 seats sold = $0 to refund 🤣

Interestingly this page suggests not, but the homepage heavily implies it. I am unsurprised there is nothing in the formalities on the website (at least where you'd expect it) regarding this 'refund guarantee' 🤣 I tried ringing Rex this morning about when the lockdown was announced but gave up after about half an hour. Any more and their classical gas-esque 30 second hold music loop would have driven me crazy!

Suffice to say I am going to see whether going up to their counter when I am next at the airport will do the trick for cancellation.

MEL-OOL currently mid flight not a soul on board.
Not sure about not a soul, seat map shows 3 in business class from MEL-OOL. Quite impressive they somehow managed a 25-minute delay on a flight with just three people.

Whilst check-in hasn't yet closed the return flight is reasonably busy, 4 seats selected in Business and 83 in Economy.

The latter is due to Victorians being "eligible" to return from Queensland, rather than bananabenders wanting to visit the previously great southern state.

Well for those lucky 3 it might end up with 14 days in hotel quarantine.

These sorts of arrangements put airlines like Rex (QF, VA, JQ included) in an interesting position, do they operate the flight in which case one direction has hardly anyone onboard but the return is rather full or do they cancel it.

Indeed, which is why for airlines with multiple timetabled flights on a given route, most will cancel as many as they can (to save on operating costs) but operate a skeleton service (given as you say, an imbalance in passengers). I have highlighted how many SYD-MEL flights are cancelled today for each of the four operators in the 'delays/cancellations' thread.

Is this the best Rex can do? Seems to be in all major papers today. Not sure if it is the BEST way of spending advertising $$, just bagging a competitor?

Also had an article written about it in 'The Australian'.

Agree that not best use of advertising dollars. Most people won't read the small font.

A university (or even high school) case study on how not to advertise in a newspaper. First look at that was a instant TLDR (Too long, didn't read).

So I've just had a look and it's only in the News Corp papers, they'd be much better to open a window and yell out of it, they'd get more attention compared to this stunt in the papers.

Whilst the ad does have a point, they'd be much better putting a giant map of Australia, draw their route networks, and list some prices on them.
