Waiting to checkin at JFK and the women's single sculls final was on.All the commentary was about the American who was a great chance of gold. But the woman who was over a length in front virtually the whole race was in green and gold.Even with 50 metres to go they were saying she's in with a chance.Well the American did get silver.

The American reporting is total cough. If an American wins you have trouble even knowing who came second and third as they do not show it. It is little wonder that the rest of the world are enjoying first ever gold medals for a Singaporean or Fijian team.

Men's hockey team (Kookaburras) have gone out losing their QF 4-0 to the Dutch. The most enigmatic side around. The Kookas win absolutely everything available between games but always seem to drop it at the Olympics (1 gold in 2004 I think). Heartbreaking for the guys.

Mens 100M final up in a cpl minutes with conditions looking good... new WR would be amazing.

I just really really hope that in a couple of year's time we do not hear that Bolt was involved with drugs. So many heroes have gone out this way. So impressive. But look at the record of the 'fastest' men in the world.

Coasting to victory

As for Bolt: just wow.

How about the South African breaking the world record in the 400m beforehand though? That was amazing. Wayde van Niekerk - remember that name.

Surely if he was doing anything dodgy it would have been uncovered long ago. It is sad that we have these cynicisms, but I think he's just a very very amazing athlete.

I am shocked and surprised Channel 7 showed the 100m final. Surely there must have been an Australian team in the qualifying rounds of the tiddly winks or the sack race that would have taken priority.

:p

Singapore is pretty happy today...first ever gold medal won by a Singaporean...Joseph Schooling won the Men's 100m Butterfly

Yeh, pretty amazing, have lived here now for 7 years, but my heart is still with Australia, but cannot deny it was a bit of buzz seeing him win, and the nation is certainly pretty elated. He was awarded $1m for his efforts by Singapore Olympic committee which has caused some debate, and also - relevant to a FF forum - SQ has given him 1m KF miles and Elite Gold Status. I think the hope is that his success will inspire kids with sporting talent to pursue their dreams - or perhaps more importantly it will inspire parents of said talented kids to encourage them to pursue their dreams. Sporting and artistic achievement is definitely at number 9 and 10 on the list of ten things you want your children to do (not sure which order), behind numbers 1-8 which are 1. Academic achievement, 2. Academic achievement, 3. Academic ....

Australian commentators are only marginally better though, they tend to parochially skew their coverage towards the Australian favourites - even ignoring other Australians. In the 400m freestyle they focused on McKeon and barely mentioned Horton until the last 50m, and he certainly didn't come from nowhere in just the last 50. I spent the first few days in Australia, watching some of the events on Seven. Noticed the difference back here in SG, listening to world feeds, which are much more balanced in their commentary. The swimming commentators - our own Nicole Livingstone, and NZ expat John McBeth have been just outstanding, and incredibly balanced.

I really hope so but I was disappointed greatly with Marion Jones and Ben Johnson. Then there is Lance Armstrong.

Or whistle ball - aka Water Polo.

Carl Lewis was also probably a drug cheat.

Lewis had problems of his own, however, not that we knew this at the time. Unbeknown to the general public until 2003, Lewis had failed a drugs test at the US Olympic trials, his urine sample containing banned stimulants. Although the volume of substances found in Lewis' urine would not bring a ban today, at the time he should have been kicked off of the Olympic team.

Generally to be a drug cheat now, you now need the support of government or someone with deep pockets to help with the latest undetectable drugs.

Their is also now the possibility that human genomes have been tampered with to increase performance. The Beijing Olympics might be the first games where people with altered genomes have competed.

Having watched a week of it, it's no worse than the Australian reporting which is rubbish. The American TV I saw all last week did show who a lot more events than we see, sure because more Americans are in more events but channel 7 is cough.

I hadn't watched any of it ... better thing to do than watch advertising with a little bit of a bit of an event here and there ...

LOL looks like the 'Bolt" was responsible for evacuating JFK T8 Home | Live Scores & Latest News | Fox Sports

MEANWHILE, IN NEW YORK

If you thought those celebrations were wild, we can only imagine what they were like inside JFK Airport in New York.

Several outlets started reporting that gun shots had been heard inside the terminal late on Sunday night, US time (Monday morning AEST). However the timing raised immediate alarm bells - the reports emerged just minutes after Bolt had claimed gold in Rio.

Sure enough, it turns out there weren’t any gun shots - rather, people “cheering, clapping and banging” after watching Bolt run into the record books were responsible for the loud noises.

The New York Police Department had to do a full search of the terminal before giving it the all clear.

Meanwhile GoT fans have adopted Australian high jumper Brandon Starc.

Yes I heard Mitchell Starc's brother was competing in the high jump and when I heard his name I had to have a GoT knowing chuckle.

Mitchel Starc (Australian Test paceman currently playing in Sri Lanka) is about 6' 7" - his brother doesn't look as tall though. High jumpers usually are pretty lofty though.
