Interesting experience on Friday. I preallocated 4A MEL-SYD on the 748 at about 3PM. Happily quaffing away in the J lounge and decided to saunter to the gate. Scan the QFF card and "Passenger not found" shows up. Off to the service desk to be told I have deboarded and bumped to the next flight at 3:30. Spewing I was told to go to the service desk who could explain.

Down to gate 1 (from gate 10) and about to launch into DYKWIA and the agent tells me it seems that I never checked in...

Oops - I was sure I had checked in yesterday but maybe I didnt finalise it...

So slightly now resigned to getting the 3:30 when after a bit of tippety tap I am given a new BP for 4F on the 3PM.

Back to gate 10 where they have been called to say I am coming. I was thinking I would be the one holding up boarding when in fact the queue is still in the aero bridge and there is actually someone boarding after me. Manage to find some space in the overhead (in J though as row 4 is full - I don't feel too bad as J is fully loaded and there is still space) and plop myself down in 4F.

So a few thoughts spring to mind...

1 - I was sure I had OLCI'd and am not sure if it was a quirk of the system or my failure
2 - How on a pretty full flight is 4F empty? I can't believe that in the time that I tried to get back on the flight the original pax in 4F was bumped to J and hadn't boarded at that point.
3 - Why couldnt the service desk at gate 10 put me back on the flight when the service desk at gate 1 could? Note I am not saying I deserved to be on the 3PM given I might have failed to check in - just intrigued

I don't think it will happen again...

To be double sure I always scan my card at the checkin terminals on the way through to security

and this is one of the reasons why I still get a boarding pass on check in rather than using using NGCI. Hard for them to tell you that you haven't checked in when your standing there holding the piece of cardboard.
(that and I'm a traditionalist when it comes to these things)

Been close to forgetting to OLCI or via one of the poles.

Oh.... That's what those machines are for.

I never check in until I get to the lounge DOM or the Airport INT.

That's why my sequence numbers are so high.

I thought those machines did your height and weight!

Is that what the sequence number is for? Your number regarding check in?

I always swipe in the totem before security or in the lounge.

Yeap...
Lowest number I've ever gotten was 2. It was for a SYD-CBR flight as part of a MIA-LAX-SYD-CBR issued in MIA.

The +1 did this once. We were running late to the airport, he checked in on his mobile...what he didn't realise is that he'd missed the window for his morning flight and the mobile checkin had only checked him for the return that afternoon. He got an SMS boarding pass which, when he tried to board, beeped. They sent him to the desk and same story "you've been deboarded". He was waving his BP on his phone (not realising it was for the wrong flight). They were very apologetic and managed to get him back on. It wasn't until that evening that he realised his mistake!

It could be worse. I arrived for a 10 hour flight with the whole family and had no tickets...we had a booking but no ticket numbers issued. Something I check these days

Yep I have embarrassingly forgotten it as well, during a week with a lot of flights.

What seat did you have originally? Perhaps 4F was yours and hadnt been allocated (yet)....

I feel dirty if my sequence number isn't 1.

Don't get me wrong - I was very relieved that it worked out as it did. I fully expected to be in 43Q...

I missed QF537 BNE-SYD flight last Friday, as I left work too late to get the right airtrain. Bugger. I had already done OLCI and grabbed 24A.

Anyhoo, I got to the airport and went to the service desk. The next flight (QF539) was totally booked, but there was an available seat on QF541. I was expecting it to be 53E or something equally horrid, but I was given a BP for 23J. It was a totally full flight as well, once we boarded.

I was quite pleased, and although I was almost resigned to spending the night in Sydney, did indeed manage to make my connecting SYD-WGA flight by about 10 minutes.
