Why I always check in at the desk and get a boarding pass. (how quaint in these modern times )
Did you end up finding somewhere or did you resign yourself to a park bench?
Last year I was asked to go to PER with about 3 days notice. I could not find a single room for the night anywhere in the city at any price range anywhere. Luckily I had a friend who had a friend who had a spare couch, otherwise I was going to be spending the night sleeping under the stars...
This has happened to me several times. Luckily my TA has a 24 hour line, though I am always less than impressed and let them know about it.

Had the agent taken the money?
I'm assuming that with an itinerary it was booked, rather not ticketed, as happened to me. Always check you have a ticket number and check in on line! I think my booking (NOT ticket) was even on the QF 'my bookings' screen.
Did your friend get on in the end?
The +1 did this once. We were running late to the airport, he checked in on his mobile...what he didn't realise is that he'd missed the window for his morning flight and the mobile checkin had only checked him for the return that afternoon. He got an SMS boarding pass which, when he tried to board, beeped. They sent him to the desk and same story "you've been deboarded". He was waving his BP on his phone (not realising it was for the wrong flight). They were very apologetic and managed to get him back on. It wasn't until that evening that he realised his mistake!
