I hear your pain. I am entirely self funded and used to earn an ok income. I am no longer working due to health issues and this needs to be a game plan. Let me say that with gold next year and possibly a Double Status Credit offer and a long weekend eg. NZ or Singapore, maybe J booking - you would be on your way. Another one or two bookings during the DSC promotions you would keep it easily. I used to work shifts and only get one weekend a month off (four days after 7 nights) and would fly somewhere, maybe taking an extra day straight after my night shift ended, then one or two domestics. Look out for the DSC promotions and don't be too disheartened.

I wish I joined Flybuys back in the 1990's

Don't underestimate shopping rewards and other opportunities for points earning - I now earn a large proportion of my points through Everyday Rewards, Flybuys, and even Online shopping via Qantas Mall (was using the Krisflyer one until they ended the program recently)

I think back in the day, you had to earning massive numbers of Flybuys to get a flight, but now you get a better deal by transferring points to get a Velocity award flight. (Or just use for retail discounts/ vouchers.) Plus Coles in particular give excellent bonus points now, but I am not sure it was the case in the 90s.

Yep. Points I find easier to earn (eg I changed to Red Energy and collect Flybuys etc), it’s status credits that’s more challenging.
