I am booked at the Sofitel, Darling hbr this weekend and have just received a confirmation from them indicating my room as a KGAOS type room. Also informed I can book an upgrade to a KGBEF or KGAEF.

Can anyone tell me what these rooms are and why don't they use normal terms like "Superior room" or "Luxury room" or "Junior suite" etc which everyone knows

TIA

ps, I tried Dr Google and even he's baffled

Did you book the hotel directly with Accor? The email should tell you exactly what room type you booked at the property, here's what mine looked like when I stayed there earlier this year:

If for some reason that's all you see, I'd probably login to your Accor account and view the reservation there to see what it states. In terms of deciphering the code, I suspect KG indicates King Side bed. If in doubt, call up the hotel and ask to speak with a manager, they'll probably be able to shed some light on this.

To your point about whether it makes sense to pay for the upgrade. It depends on the cost of the upgrade, what you are getting in return and your elite status. For instance, if I am a Gold (or lower) Accor elite and there was an upgrade offer to move to a room with Executive Lounge access for $50, I'd take it in a heartbeat. But even as a Platinum, if it was $100 to upgrade to a Junior Suite I'd probably take it too, since generally Accor does not upgrade even their higher tier elites like yours truly to a suite level room at a Sofitel for free.

It's their internal codes at the property for the room type - probably not meant to make it's way onto what's visible to guests on the booking, but maybe was transposed to the wrong field in the system by revenue management. You sometimes see them on the folio at the end of the stay as well.

Cheers,
Matt.

Yes, agree, but the IT people should proof read the site and correct that sort of thing before it goes live. I mean what's the point in offering me an upgrade to KGBEF or KGAEF when I don't know what I am upgrading to and whether its worth it or not.
Considering the original room I booked I don't think I really need a better room, as a Plat I already get club access, breakfast, afternoon drinkies etc

True - you'd need to give them a call if interested about what it's from, and to

I know this is late now, but I'd have though KG is King bed and the EF might be Executive Floor. I guess, as a Plat if you upgraded yourself, a complimentary upgrade might be even better.

Accor doesn’t do upgrades, hotels do, and a quick look at various threads on elite experiences proves upgrades are possible, maybe you need to get a little bit more experience in the program:

Sofitel Beverly Hills

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Lowest category, received Presidential Suite

Sofitel Adelaide

- Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked Luxury Club Room & received Prestige Suite

Sofitel Brussels Europe

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive? Had three back to back bookings - the middle one (and longer one) being through a travel agent and hence not eligible for any ALL benefits. My two bookings were for Luxury Room, the travel agent booking was for a classic room. I was upgraded to a junior suite for the whole stay.

SO/Vienna
Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive? We booked a SO/COSY and received a SO/Studio junior suite

Sofitel Munich Bayerpost

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive? I booked a luxury room, was upgraded to one of the unique artist suites.

The Sofitel in question is owned by Dr Jerry Founders | Schwartz Family Company who has quite a few brands, inc various Mecures and the Surfers Hilton and its owners who will dictate upgrades.

While it’s true SNUs account for many upgrades as they are good value at Sofitels, it’s also your PCV which tracks you patronage and experiences across all chains of the brand that has an effect. I am very much mindful of this before I demand benefits and upgrades that I may not be entitled to.
