I'm looking at this short leg later in the year and am wondering if anyone has recent experience. Both front and back of the plane are substantially cheaper than CX. On time performance appears ok but the quality of the product in J gets mixed reviews.

I flew the BKK-HKG leg late last year. Stupidly, I went in Y not realising J was only ~$100 more and I would imagine earns full J points/SC.

The Y service was average at best. Crew were rude and blunt (then again, I think they fly straight through from Amman so I can't blame them too much) but the food was terrible. I had beef of some sort but didn't touch it. I'm drawing blank on the alcohol service... can't remember it to save myself but I'm guessing there was something available.

I'm doing it again in a few months but J this time. I guess given its only about $350 for business one can't complain too much. Even Air Asia is rarely less than $200 on this route.

Definitely worth the extra $100 for J over Y or a LCC. Very impressed with their service when I flew J in January. The aircraft from BKK-HKG was almost empty (with the majority departing the plane after arriving from AMM), and no more than half of the 18 J seats were taken (with 3 being in my party).

Cheesy

I believe the AMM-BKK-HKG flight was on an A310 (51" in J), not sure if it's changed since January.

I had totally forgotten about using RJ from BKK-HKG.

I don't know where people are getting their airfares but business class appears to be 2.5 times the price of economy. Still good to have another option to get from HKG-BKK and return if I can ever find award availability on VS....

For the date I'm looking at in November RJ Y is 5,660Bt and J 9,625Bt compared with CX at Y 15,425Bt and J 21,975Bt, all including taxes.

One-way? For January 2010 and April 2010 I am getting ~7,500 THB return for WHY and ~19,500 THB return for business class. I don't have definite dates yet just looking at various options....

When I flew in January this year, I had booked in August '08 at the bargain price of $A300 (I think it was around THB 9900), great exchange rate ... not quite the same now exchange rate now, but I believe the local price hasn't changed.

How was your checkin experience with RJ cheesy?;)

I ain't having that mannej, you know well and truly that it wasn't my fault, and this thread isn't about to turn into a trip report.

For those playing at home, let's just say that it became a bit like "The Amazing Race" in terms of booking flights at the airport!

Only if it is better than mine and then you many not get it back again. ;)

The airfares we are both getting are similar except I was looking at return. Still looks like a viable option for BKK-HKG and good to know it exists. I wish Finnair were still doing the tag flights. :(

cheesy/ Manej - got to see some friendly banter from new members.
Take it you two know each other / shared that trip?

Didn't share that leg of the trip, mannej joined me in HKG as we headed towards Japan for the last week of my Eurasian Escapade. Reasonably good friends ... for now!

Good friends Cheesy until I find a reason to call off for Saturday;)
Just make sure you have the same CC you booked your flights with when you check in with RJ!

Did you get the original tickets refunded?

So to fill everyone in (thanks Josh!), RJ have a strict policy that the credit card that was used to purchase the tickets must be presented at check in. Unfortunately my colleague who made the bookings had his credit card stolen between the date we made the booking and the date of the flight. This resulted in him acquiring a new card with a new number. As we did not have a letter from the bank outlining this fact, we could not check in.

After numerous phone calls to the bank, and with the bank speaking to the managing supervisor at check in (which at BKK is controlled by TG as there are no RJ representatives), they still refused us to check in. We eventually paid for another set of tickets (at the new exchange rate), and then had the original booking refunded by RJ at a later date.

Thanks for the reminder Josh! ;)

Yes I forgot to mention that RJ were very cough about the credit card check. As part of that trip I flew about 30 sectors on airlines from Qantas and American to Ryanair and Volareweb, and RJ were the only ones to check it.

Checkin staff were also oddly rude for Thai people, and struggled with the basics like allocating two seats together.
