Royal Jordanian BKK-HKG

So to fill everyone in (thanks Josh!), RJ have a strict policy that the credit card that was used to purchase the tickets must be presented at check in. Unfortunately my colleague who made the bookings had his credit card stolen between the date we made the booking and the date of the flight. This resulted in him acquiring a new card with a new number. As we did not have a letter from the bank outlining this fact, we could not check in.

I did a trip from HKG to BKK last year on RJ in Y and thought they were ok.

Checked in at the J queue no problems once they saw the SG card. Got a front aisle seat with and empty seat beside me. They never asked for my CC at all. In fact no one did when I travelled last year.

Checkin staff were also oddly rude for Thai people, and struggled with the basics like allocating two seats together.
At the risk of receiving another infraction I do not see this as odd at all.

Have just flown RJ in Y from Amman to Hong Kong. Full flight to Bangkok and rather an odd bunch of passengers of all types, but most got out in BKK so there were only 50 or so continuing to HKK.

RJ has very good leg room in Y on all flights. Service was not as good on this flight as on three other legs with RJ from Budapest to Amman (soon being replaced by Malev), Amman to Aleppo, and Damascus to Amman. On these flights service excellent and very few passengers.

Thanks Borsa, I have been looking at how to get to Egypt from Hong Kong and was wondering what the flight was like AMN-HKG in Y (A319 looks like a small plane for a longhaul flight ...) Was either looking at CX to Dubai then RJ to CAI but I would prefer a stopover in Amman to get down to Petra than a night in Dubai ...

What was the food & entertainment like ?

I had totally forgotten about using RJ from BKK-HKG.

I don't know where people are getting their airfares but business class appears to be 2.5 times the price of economy. Still good to have another option to get from HKG-BKK and return if I can ever find award availability on VS....

Why do you have VS points John??

If it makes you feel any better a work colleague is having the same issues, I did tell then to transfer it to Krisflyer....

Why do you have VS points John??
That is a secret and I am not telling. :p

Actually the VS points are from Hertz and Avis car hire. The idea is to get a "free" return trip to HKG in either WHY or premium economy without having taken a paid flight on VS! ;) And once getting to HKG I will need a HKG-BKK return flight....

Got it... I thought you may have accidentally transferred points from Amex or something!!

A brief report on my flight last week in J.

Check in was painfully slow (took 15 minutes) with faulty computers. Also I had to fill in forms declaring that I was actually responsible for the tickets I'd purchased on credit card.

After check-in they pointed us to one of the Thai lounges but I decided to check out the new QF lounge. Big mistake. It opened at 1.00pm (or about 10 past when someone arrived) but no food of drinks appeared until 1.45pm. The Flounge opposite didn't open until 2.30pm just as we were heading off to board. On a quick look it appeared to be a smaller version and had the same food (eventually) as the J lounge. Clearly there were very few customers at that time.

Only 5 of the 18 J seats on the A310 were taken. (There had been a sign at checkin you could upgrade though I did not find out the price.) Seats were comfortable for sitting with loads of legroom and the bed position was at least as comfortable as the QF Skybed Mk1. Disappointments were the food - much better in the reading than in the eating and the JQ style video unit. It took 3 for me to find one that worked and then it was poor quality material. As the flight was particularly quick, just over 2 hours, service was rushed. However, there was still time for a staff party behind the curtain.

All up, just ok for a short flight, particularly at the price but would have been a bit peeved if the food and service had been the same for the long leg from Amman.

RJ didnt ask for my Credit Card either. I presented by Platinum card and Passport (having checked in on line anyway)

Guys, I know that you are keen on RJ because of the OW earning........ but as an isolated flight experience.........wouldn't the J Class Emirates A380 one-way for $400 be the pick of these flights? A310 vs A380, no contest surely.
Even the Y class flight for $200 is great value, and don't forget you receive 30kg baggage allowance on Emirates Y fares :-) Surely the clincher is the 5.40pm arrival time into Hong Kong as opposed to the 8.05pm arrival time on RJ.

You can still credit to Velocity for another week :-)

Actually, RJ uses A330 on the route these days. Even so, I was all set to go Emirates myself in a few days (HKD4405 J return!!!), but as I was going to be in HKG for an eternity after arriving on QF029 that morning, I knew I'd want to be spending a good portion of eternity in some nice OW Flounges, after spending some time in Hong Kong proper of course. That was the clincher for me. Will report on my RJ HKG - BKK - HKG Y experience in a couple of weeks!

It's been a while since I've looked at this thread........but I now note that One World candidate Sri Lankan Airlines is yet another airline taking the Fifth Freedom rights between these 2 city pairs. A330 Dep BKK:1.15pm Arr: 4.55pm

Geez, even Skyteam partner Kenya Airways is now using a 777 on this route.

Should be more cheap J opportunities then!

I wonder what pricing would be like HKG-BKK-colombo-Europe like in J on Sri Lankan?

I'm off next week on the EK A380 HKG-BKK in J. RJ just can't compete with the inflight bar (not even the SCs are worth it!)

Once EK allows QF SC earning that becomes very attractive too. Especially for a cheap F experience!

If flying from HKG, don't forget that you can use the in-town check-in from either Kowloon or Hong Kong Island (Central). Handy if carrying the J weight allowance.
