Ruby Rose upgraded as a friend of staff.

… but most of the threads still concern Ruby Rose and her ripped jeans.

Well maybe who she is, but not a lot has been about her ripped jeans. They might have been the reason she was initially denied boarding or whatever, but most of the posts are who? :p

Just remembr guys she was using QANTAS staff travel benefits (well what my sources have told me), she has a friend in QF who gave her the benefit. Staff fare rules and conditions are different from commercial pax.

QFCSA,

A good and relevant post. Thanks for putting some perspective back into the discussion.

Exactly....this should be the point of the discussion.

Why is she using a QF staff member's travel benefit? Are you telling me she cannot get Myer, MTV or in the least her own company to pony up a (tax deductible) J seat?

Her level of fame (or infamy) is irrelevant...except for the fact the incident made the Courier Mail.

Maybe it should be the point of the discussion. Of course that would be a short discussion I imagine.

But I do think it is equally relevant to discuss why this story is in the courier mail. As in who this person even is in the first place. That then puts a context on why they might be ignoring the rules of staff travel or even getting staff travel benefits when maybe not registered or whatever needs to happen.

Hmmmm there wasn't a problem with those exact jeans when I was sitting next to her, in business, two weeks ago.... Consistently inconsistent?

Was she on staff travel 2 weeks ago? That may explain the difference.

Apparently between age 12 and 16 was taunted and abused by school mates for being gay? Ended up in hospital at 16. Sure I could understand that when I went to school in the 1970s and early 1980s but this would have been 1998 to 2002.

I don’t mean to derail this thread again, but as you mentioned it, and the sad news broke today, a 13 year old boy died after having been on life support for 10 days after a suicide attempt. He was bullied for being gay.

The world still sucks.

Well she’s not staff, she was given the benefit from a friend. :p

Not an excuse - by travelling on a staff fare, she's subject to staff travel rules whether she knows them or not. It would be her friend's responsibility to ensure that she knew them, and her friend's benefits on the line for her breach.

Perhaps that time she was on a commercial fare in which case she can wear whatever the hell she wants (within reason)? FWIW, when I saw her today she was neither dressed in the 'infringing' jeans or the prim and proper getup in the photo, but (dare I say it) dignified in her chicness.

I don't think that jeans per se were the problem, so much as her designer cuts. Some old, but most likely still relevant, publicly available info about dress code for staff travel suggests the following:

Qantas, not acceptable:

Tracksuits, jeans with cut off and frayed hems, designer holes etc. Singlets, bare midriffs, strapless tops/dresses, overly revealing clothing, rubber thongs or bare feet.Any extremes of leisurewear - including sweatshirts or T-shirts with questionable graphics or language.
Personal hygiene standards must be exemplary

At the end of the day, the only reason this is an issue is because she was travelling on staff benefits and expected to be treated as if she were a commercial passenger by drawing attention to herself - the cardinal sin of staff travel. If you don't get upgraded for whatever reason, you smile and suck it up as you board the plane - a small price to pay for the opportunity in itself. I do feel sorry for the friend, whose benefits are quite possibly at risk of revocation - though perhaps she should have known better. Or perhaps we actually don't know the whole story. :)

+1

And DYKWIA certainly doesn't apply when travelling on a non-revenue fare either (Nor should it ever to be honest)

Don't like the non-rev rules, buy a commercial fare:!:

My point posting this article really sums up in my mind the loyalty you get back from QFF for being loyal to them.I understand staff getting travel perks, even extending to their family, but friends as well. She had just been upgraded to J LAX-SYD prior to this incident(I am presuming as a friend of staff). As this is a popular route where any WPs sitting down the back especially if they had put in for an upgrade.
The reason the article got my attention was because on my AA flight just before i read the article AA staff(wearing ID but in civvies)were down the back and at least 4 ordinary pax upgraded to F-that was the number on the upgrade list when we got to the gate.soon after they announced all upgrades had cleared. That to me is a better loyalty scheme.

Sorry, but if overbooking occurs upgrades will be given to the WP's and so on, but if there isn't any of that occuring staff members with an upgradable ticket (which you get after 7 years on international flights) will get the business class seat, which is fair. If WP's etc want the upgrades, pay for it!

Also Ruby was using the staff travel for a commercial purpose (by going to PER to sell her clothing), this is also a big no-no on QF staff travel. Staff travel is ONLY to be used for lesuire purposes only and nothing to do with other business ventures.

By someone seeing her in the lounge she would've had a confirmed ticket, staff travel does not allow people to enter the lounge (no matter what class of travel is confirmed)

Aren't WPs indicating a willingness to pay for the upgrade when they ask for a points upgrade? I think the situation that was hinted was that the WP upgrade is turned down but staff do get upgraded. I would question staff getting an upgrade over a customer who is willing to pay for it with their hard earned points that are the basis of all the profits that the frequent flyer program are making for qantas.

I think that cuts both ways. While I think it's fair and just that senior staff should get upgrades, for all they've given the airline, so too should any frequent flyer, for all the money they've spent over the years.

I'd agree it's hard to be equal and fair :p

I think you'll find it's only one friend, so the staff member can include partner/husband/wife, someone who isn't a blood relative and they can only change that friend on the QF list of approved people no more often than 6 monthly.

Ruby Rose will be yesterday's news in a couple of years, as Gen Y find somebody else to oogle over. She's getting what she can, whilst she can.

Actually now that I think about it, I shared a lift ride with her at the MEL Hilton (South Wharf) when I was last there. Very quiet, kept to herself and I knew her face, but couldn't put a name to her. Attractive too

Remember that being advised to me by wife #1 and ex-girlfriend.
