Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 or iPad2?

Now, now Jessica. Don't be nasty. I am an oldie!

Cheaper than what?

I have been researching and iPad2 = ~$398 and Samsung = ~$360. Either way the 10% discount for TRS will help.

Dick Smith and Officeworks have both been advertising them for $339 in the last week, but a quick check has them both throwing up the 'out of stock' line (at least online - bit hard to check in store at the moment!).

That doesn't help me for now.

Keep an eye out and let me know if you see something in the next week.

Most of the Dick Smiths I tried in Sydney are listing it as in stock this morning (not Eastgardens).

If you know somewhere I can get either cheaper I would appreciate the assistance.

Why pass up the opportunity for 670 odd velocity points at the same time!

I'd just go iPad 2 purely for simplicity, as it doesn't look like you'll be using the device for anything too strenuous.

I haven't used a Tab before but I prefer Android simply because it is inherently more extensible. I enjoy being able to take control of the system, being able to tweak settings to my liking and generally not being constrained to an app store and a single synchronisation client (which must be installed on the target computer).

I'm not really into games (I have really next to none installed on my Samsung S3) - in fact, having to trawl through the multitude of games on each of the respective stores (Apple Store and Google Play) when I'm looking at the top apps is more infuriating to me than anything. (Not that I've ever played games before, but I'm not into all the game playing junk on the smaller devices now). Since Apple came out with their store and due to the halo effect, there are inherently more games for Apple out there (including free ones, most 'subsidised' using in-app advertising), and often designers will target Apple platform first before Android platform.

And, if you are to believe straitman, for moral reasons you don't really want to purchase a device which was designed by a company who is a corporate thief. ;)

So, in summary, I'd just settle with the iPad 2.

Let's not get into morals as that starts to bring many things into play including and not limited to extra marrital affairs.

I can see this is not going to be an easy decision to make.

Well if you go with the majority so far in the thread, there's a clear winner (so far).

I think in many cases, given that you are not using the device for anything really major, just settle with a choice and be happy. At least with iPad 2 you would have more "technical support" available on AFF :)

Well, if you need USB then iDevice is out, unless you use an adaptor.

Apple tends to be easy to use, but not as configurable. I have an iPad, but I got the Samsung phone due to being able to change it around how I like it. Like having my weather widget and alarm clock on the "home page". If you're using Apple it's just icons.

Both platforms tend to have plenty of Apps available.

What gets me is the pi**y memory on the iThingy. I have a 64 gig card in my phone, which is about as big as my little finger nail, yet the largest memory capacity in the iPad is 64 gig. It's a joke. And I have lots of TV and movies loaded for my daughter to keep her busy while travelling.

Ipad 2 vs 3? We have both. The display is nicer on the 3 both it's not like the difference between DVD and VHS. The 3 tends to get very warm due to the Retina Display, and bigger battery required to run it. The 3 is not massively faster than the 2 either. For value the 2 is a winner.

have always been Windows based so much prefer Samsung Tablet. tried the IPAD2, as we had it earlier (young adult teenagers who were I-based prefer it. ) i just couldn't get the hang of it, everything seemd to be oppsite, and felt i was too old to change and purchased the Samsung instead. much happier. have the adaptors for USB's etc, the same as for the IPAD. have had it since March and much prefer it

The iThings do have a USB/memory card adapter available, however it is only to connect a camera or card to transfer photos. It is the one failing of Apple devices that I do not like. Nevertheless I believe the positives outweigh this.

Remember that Apple said no to USB3 for quite a while before conceding. The same 'may' happen with memory cards (although privately I doubt it).

Aside from tweaking settings, what major things can you do on a droid tablet that you can't do on an iPad?

Upgrade the storage cheaply, view flash, use it as a phone, replace it cheaply, download apps over 20mb using 3G, use 4g in Australia for significantly higher download speeds, charge it easily with an industry standard cable.......

Upgrade the storage cheaply
....errrrr 64GB is more than enough for me

view flash
....errr no benefit to me

use it as a phone
......eh? Let me throw my phone away so that I can use a tablet device as a phone...I wonder if I can use my garden shed as a phone?

replace it cheaply
....have I found myself in a production of Oliver Twist?

download apps over 20mb using 3G
....yep got me there.....I will just have to use wifi.

use 4g in Australia for significantly higher download speeds
...bugger...and I thought my mini had 4g

charge it easily with an industry standard cable
.......coz nobody has an iphone3/4, iPod, or iPad?

:p

You can use an iPad as a phone as well, to be fair; it's just Skype or Viber etc. but that works.

Am I seeing correctly that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 uses a 30-pin connector? Is this the same as the old Apple? (If so, it's dubious but arguable that it's "industry standard")

I'm assuming it's the same as my Samsung S3, but transfer of files is much easier between a computer and an Android device, as you don't have to mess around with sync clients (e.g. iTunes). Samsung does provide Kies, but I don't like it. Especially for computers without such software, or even different OSes, you can still effortlessly transfer photos, music or PDFs. I don't know if Apple has changed, but last I used my iPod touch the files were still kept in some sort of structure which I can't work out (it's numbered folders) - you can find your original files, but I can't work out how Apple has sequenced them into the folders. This constrains you to use iTunes; sure, one way around it is to simply use Share facilities or the iCloud........

Overall, I like the control and the flexibility that an Android device can afford me, but for JohnK's purposes he is not going to need (or necessarily want) all that control, especially when most of the people using Android devices, I would guess, are actually self-sufficient in terms of tech knowledge. If JohnK had a problem with his iPad 2, not only are there plenty of people here who could help him out, but he also has Geniuses at Apple Stores at his disposal (as well as tech classes at Apple Stores on how to use an iPad). There isn't that in-store support when you get a Tab (though there would be enough people here who could help him out, or try to).

I should point out that my post was made from an iPad, and is merely a list of things that bug me, especially when my main phone has a flat battery, or when I am on the road and find a nice app but cannot download, or when I have to pack an extra cable for the trip only to loose it or forget it in the room. As for not ending more than 64Gb, I still dread meeting an ex QF pilot I sold a computer to in 1989 whom I told 10 Mb was all he would ever need as far as storage goes . Moores law re computing power could quite easily also cover the demand for storage!

My response was purely tongue in cheek, not to be taken literally. The iPad is not perfect by any means...and I'm no Apple fanboi, although I do tend to buy the "latest and greatest".

As for cables I carry a retractable all in one mini USB/micro USB/Ipod cable and a lightning adapter.

Whatever you get the 3G (or 4G) capability is becoming irrelevant. Nearly everyone these days has a smart phone which doubles as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. And it is getting easier all the time when overseas to get a local sim card for your phone with a reasonable data allowance.

And if you are going to be using it mainly for travelling, also have a look at the 7 inch tablets, eg Nexus 7 or iPad mini. Nexus 7 is only $250 or so, weighs virtually nothing and will fit in your pocket when not in use. Sure the viewing experience might not be as good as an iPad retina display but the convenience is awesome.

It wasn't taken seriously, all good, after all its technology, not religion . I also forgot to add, the ability to operate as a hotspot!
