Samsung outfoxes Apple with a must-have phone accessory (paywalled, sorry)

Apparently an issue with Apple Air Tags is that their batteries can be swallowed by children.

It’s no mere coincidence that iPhone users were struck by the FOCO the very next month. The retailer Officeworks refused to stock the AirTag, complaining it was too easy for young children to open it (which it absolutely is) and swallow the battery.

That's not my experience in trying to get batteries out of airtags, which I related in the AirTag thread, but obviously is a thing.

Well, up until now, that is. Samsung has just released its AirTag equivalent, the SmartTag2, and it’s iPhone users who now must suffer both FOMO and FOCO, which we shall just call FOXO for the sake of brevity.

Yep, we’ve been testing the SmartTag2 here in the Digital Life Labs, and we’ve come to the conclusion that it’s as good as the AirTag in most respects, and better than the AirTag in some respects that matter a great deal, especially if you are or know someone who might eat button batteries.

I’m surprised they didn’t just argue that the AirTag itself can be swallowed….. At least you can then keep track of the kids on travel.

But re batteries, they’re standard CR02032 batteries used all over the place….

I don't even know why those batteries are suddenly an issue these last few years when decades ago, none of us good kids didn't even think about touching those things.

Child protection is in overdrive now. Not unreasonably but I do wonder how our kids survived. Usually those button batteries need to have one of those micro screws as a fastener.

I remember as a kid I had those tiny nintendo handheld games and they used LR44 batteries. Never crossed my mind to eat them.

Well, I have to admit as a five year old I pushed a button up my nose, a clothing one, not electronic. My mother was so embarrassed by my behaviour especially when the Dr asked to see the baby with a button up her nose.
