Scams like these

Very bold.
Now they (the fake Toll co) are even asking for licence plate number, via their fake search system.
Never seen that before.
Wonder how the "Aust anti scam (authority)" is going to clamp down on phone numbers that send these sms.
Even if they (phone numbers) are fake.
$10m nak, its $58m of our taxes going to another "authority".
Another "toothless" tiger, probably.

Most likely.

However, maybe something they say or do will lead to TelCo requirements to not allow caller-number spoofing? So that when you see a call is from a number, it’s the actual number it’s coming from? Then you can ignore all the unknown numbers in India & the Phillipines?

Found that some of the scam calls to my daughters phone are from Telstra and her mobile phone service will be cut off.

Press 1 for English or press 2 for Chinese.

You'd really be naive to think that Telstra offers Chinese customer support in Australia. So I pressed 2. I guess that was a hello but then silence. I used a few choice words that made me happy and hung up.

Junk emails back up >50 a day. Annoying....

There is also the "fake" China Police needs to contact you sort of thing.
For JohnK, personally, I would not have pressed 2/or 1 or any number.
The screen might say Telstra, but we do not know who the real caller is, maybe its someone from China.
Who knows, your daughters number ((which might have been from someone else in the past, and the number gets recycled)), might now be added to the "sextortion" thing, where people, esp kids fall for the send me photos, then, pay me or I will send them to your family and friends.
I am sure a lot of ebay sellers do sell or pass on phone numbers, I do buy a lot of things from ebay, and they (sellers) "need" our phone numbers, I always put my real one in, then someone mentioned to me, you could put 0400 000 000, heh, that would be a good one.
As Forg says, something might happen from the Aust Anti Scam Centre, who knows.

The recorded voice said it was Telstra. My daughters service provider is TPG but we did start with Lebara and transferred the number to TPG.

My daughter knows to only answer daddy, mummy, uncle and grand parents numbers.

Sick and tired of these morons.

This was in my junk mail today. Some seriously unpleasant people out there. I assume there is no point reporting the Bitcoin Wallet number to anyone? I guess they simply want a response to try and really get into my system. Oh and my PC has no camera or microphone and my laptop has its camera locked off.

"Hi there!

I am a professional hacker and have successfully managed to hack your operating system.
Currently I have gained full access to your account.

In addition, I was secretly monitoring all your activities and watching you for several months.
The thing is your computer was infected with harmful spyware due to the fact that you had visited a website with cough content previously.
╭ ᑎ ╮

Let me explain to you what that entails. Thanks to Trojan viruses, I can gain complete access to your computer or any other device that you own.
It means that I can see absolutely everything in your screen and switch on the camera as well as microphone at any point of time without your permission.
In addition, I can also access and see your confidential information as well as your emails and chat messages.

You may be wondering why your antivirus cannot detect my malicious software.
Let me break it down for you: I am using harmful software that is driver-based,
which refreshes its signatures on 4-hourly basis, hence your antivirus is unable to detect it presence.

I have made a video compilation, which shows on the left side the scenes of you happily masturbating,
while on the right side it demonstrates the video you were watching at that moment..ᵔ.ᵔ

All I need is just to share this video to all email addresses and messenger contacts of people you are in communication with on your device or PC.
Furthermore, I can also make public all your emails and chat history.

I believe you would definitely want to avoid this from happening.
Here is what you need to do - transfer the Bitcoin equivalent of $500 to my Bitcoin account
(that is rather a simple process, which you can check out online in case if you don't know how to do that).

Below is my bitcoin account information (Bitcoin wallet):
bc1q5hs655qx0ndm8nqdqyl200uthp42nma8a4v43v

Once the required amount is transferred to my account, I will proceed with deleting all those videos and disappear from your life once and for all.
Kindly ensure you complete the abovementioned transfer within 50 hours (2 days +).
I will receive a notification right after you open this email, hence the countdown will start.

Trust me, I am very careful, calculative and never make mistakes.
If I discover that you shared this message with others, I will straight away proceed with making your private videos public.''

Good luck!

"happily masturbating" Are there other ways? :)

That one @OZDUCK mentioned, apparently there’s a similar thing scammers are doing to “influencers”. Now I might have total & utter contempt for those who follow influencers, and little to no sympathy for influencers themselves as they’re basically being a waste of space, but the scammers poast hacked/fake photos & videos of those influencers unless said influencers pay up; which then destroys their business. It’s pretty nasty.

On the other hand if anyone posted some faked cough video of me, it’d probably be more impressive than real life so would likely have no negative effect at all …

A new type of scam to me

Last edited by a moderator:
why has the Linkt hacking episode not been reported to the public. I called them when I received an sms and they said computer system will be down all week end. They could not help with my enquiry

I’ve started sending the SMS to Scamwatch. No idea if they take action but it makes me feel better.

Didn't think we were going to have a problem with this one.

My wife called someone in the village last night to enquire about paving driveway. First call he didn't answer. Second call appears he blocked number. Cannot call.

Tried calling 2 tile shops in Chiang Mai and Lamphun and same thing. First call no answer and then block the number.

Now what? Id like to do some planning before next trip. They obviously think we're part of the call centre gang trying to scam them. Argh....

Maybe send them am SMS message first, letting them know you are a genuine enquiry, justify calling from Australia, and will call in the next 10 mins?

Lots of these and it's interesting how they just adapt them for each country. In the UK I have received a text message that looks the same as the Australia Post text only starts with Royal Mail.

I had a call a few days ago were a pre recorded American voice said something like "This is the federal tax department you have outstanding taxes, law enforcement officers have been advised press 1 to speak to an advisor. Failure to do this will result in court proceedings"

I can't remember the exact words but it was just so American that to a Brit it just didn't sound real.

It kinda makes sense, when most of the scammers aren’t in Australia, that they’d have a single “script” and insert whatever’s locally relevant into that script. Having said that, I’ve been sent scam SMS’s talking about my debt to the IRS.

Had my Auspost fake one today.
Didn't take a photo, but it was addressed "Auspost.xx_.city".
It was from 0431 xx_ 972.
===
Wait till the $68m "Australian Anti Scam Centre" becomes live.
Heh, toothless tiger.
So, how will they deal with the/se scams?
It would be better if they, ie, the ACCC put out major ads in the daily newspapers, and also on social media about not replying to the fake(ish) linkt/ato/afp/auspost scams,
Unless all these become banned words.
If the scammers are spoofing phone numbers, and they are going to use phone numbers as base for banning, then the honest real owner of the numbers will get into trouble.
As Forg mentioned in one reply, the best solution "might" be to make it impossible to spoof a phone number via technology, or make VOIP harder.
