Scams like these

I must admit i fell for this one

Selling my car, wanted to see what the car was, clicked it, asked for my fb login
Was about to type it in, got distracted, never completed it

I only realized it was a scam until I got identical message from three different people in an hour

Does anyone know how they can put ATO into the sender, on the call number they have sent this from?
Not that I want to, or will do some copying.
So, ABC is 1, DEF is 2, etc, but how do they convert that to mask the senders number, to read (ATO-xx_x)?
Looks like they must have learn this from somewhere, or passed some certificate to do this, (Certificate in Scamming Ops 1).

I believe it's pretty easy for scammers to change the from: number.
Ive Been told there are apps or its a quick fiddle around

I am sorting out some ATO stuff getting a TFN for a deceased estate. Having completed initial paperwork (and they do advise they may be in contact if more needed) I got an SMS a week later advising I needed to contact them to discuss. It contained a ref no for the request and ATO number to call. All legit - I checked the number but my ‘scammeradar’ was switched on to make sure.
When I rang, they ID’d me after sending me a phone code (like when you go onto my Gov) and we sorted out what was needed.
No link inside an sms ever they said

In fact, every time I get something from My.Gov/my.gov (actually the ATO) that needs my attention, the email always says, it always says, to log into "your"/in my case, my my.gov account.
As Martinee and others have said, its never a link in an sms/never got an sms actually, its always "you have a message from mygov, please log into your mygov account to view".
I think that some people who get those links, either don't think it through or the word "you have a tax refund" in the sms really lights their fire, and they click the link.
Surprising the Aust govt hasn't come out widely and say, "don't do this", ie, don't click the link.

That email looks a bit "iffy", does Gumtree really use "GumtreShoppSupp".
Looks so crooked.
"Your item has been issued"... is so close to the grammar of an African/Indian scammer.
Offer to buy, for $1860, and then "your item has been issued"?
I wouldn't have opened the email, personally, I would have deleted and blocked the person.
9 years and never sold anything, any buy activity, have you had a look at google maps to see what that address is.
===
A basic investigo,
That address has a house on it, so that part is kosher.
===
Not a lot you can do.
Do a once drive by, if you live in metro SYD, but I guess that is about it.
If you go too far, they can call the cops on you as they "fear for their safety", if you go knocking on their door.
Its hard, being honest these days.

My older mum is on a pension, and has super, so I have to (as authorised rep, (she does not know how to upload data onto mygov)), put in her data, on ServiceAustralia, and log in from mygov.
Its always a notification in my email address, so far, they have not phoned.
But with so many people being able to do "unknown number/private number" who knows who is what or who is who these days.

yes had a look at the address, its just a normal house....

so im thinking maybe a hijacked account, and Mila Kelly is just an innocent victim

If you think about it, Mila Kelly sounds like a name an African would use.
Like the Bryan Chiliam one, ... as if.
Only one way to look it it, but we can't openly check, is the Aust electoral rolls.
But that has no photos on it.
Like the fake US army romance scam/scammers, photos are so easy to cut and paste.
Re: that address can also be of a package mule, similar to money mules, where she onsends the package.
Gumtree is cash on delivery, yes?
So she might present a "fake" cheque.
===
On another tangent, what will happen when Aust does not use cheques anymore from 2025?, 2030.

come to think about it , good point

im sure scammers will have come up with the next new method by 2030;)

a lot of people say "who the hell would be stupid enough to fall for something so ridiculous" but i think for older people its a scary world,

im in my 30s and I struggle with trying to copy social media posts to fwd to friends !

Not quite a scam but very close. There's one currency exchange franchise in Pattaya that has the following exchange

USD 35.099 baht (currently 35.75 baht)
AUD 22.099 baht (currently 22.85 baht)
EUR 36.099 baht (currently 37.00 baht)
GBP 43.099 baht (currently 43.70 baht)

I don't recall ever seeing anyone advertise the 3rd decimal place.

Your mind ignores the 0 and you think you're getting a good rate.

As I mentioned upthread, there must be a darkweb tuition course, or teach them how to do it, out there.
Using alphabets as numbers, etc, or making links in sms.
I would love to call every scammer and waste their time, with the Adele song, (hello, is anybody out there).
