Scams like these

I just received an e-mail, supposedly from OPTUS, with this heading. Now deleted.

They make money if some naive or not oriented people click on the blue links and supply their data ....

If there will be no response ...the scammers will not be sending them...

So, awerness is very important...🤔
<sarcastic voice> Oh really I hadn't realised that <sarcastic voice ends>

I'm posting in the scam thread - I think I realised it was a scam

I am getting heaps of calls in the last 2 weeks
Clearly someone has my data
I ported my second phone from TPG (Vodafone) to Woolworths (Telstra) this week. I had not had a scam call or message on the TPG service for many months but now it is with Telstra I am getting around 2 calls per day. Clearly the scammers have access to number movements, just like when I arrive back in Sydney from OS and as soon as I turn on my main phone I immediately start receiving scam numbers calling. I have no idea what goes on behind the scene but I am suspicious of the co-incidences.

In the news today, I think I read that TA/TonyA (our PM) at long last has noticed the scams that have beset Aussies.
$94m lost in the past 12 months, the blurb said.
---
Seems so easy for scammers to get into big companies.
Even Dan, gYg and event cinemsa.
Before that, Telstra, optus... and Medibank, ...

Well, .... scaring by mentioning "fraud" looks like an improved tactic being used by scammers... Someone could panic and follow scammers instructions, open and "read the attached file"...

I found similar tactics in emails ... with one on this thread...

Therefore, never panic, be cautious and never open attachment from an unknown email or SMS...🤔

Almost one year ago I and my wife moved our mobile numbers from Vodafone to Optus.
Number of call from scummers dropped from 2-3 per week to about just one.

We also had a lot of fraud calls on our landline via TPG but now just about one per month, because we are not providing this number to anybody any more (just friends, family, banks, insurance and official government institutions).

That’s going to be coincidental if you kept the same number, once you’re on one of the many lists it takes years to drop off.

Very likely.

This could be true with our landline, as we stopped to providing our landline number to commercial businesses.

However, we are still surprised that frequency of fraud calls significantly dropped after porting our numbers from Vodafone to Optus. Maybe Optus has some facilities to discover and block the Spoofed Caller ID being used by scammers ?

I am not sure about this, but maybe somebody has a deeper knowledge on discovery and blocking the spoofed callers?

Such facilities are required, but there might be a conflict of interest because it might undercut Telco's revenue. 🤔

Geez I hope not, that would make all the others unbearable!
I’m with Optus and I peaked at about a dozen scam calls per day … it only started trailling-off about 6 months after I stopped answering calls from numbers I didn’t recognise.

I think that the reason behind the dropping frequency of the fraud calls in our case is that we do not answer calls other that:
▪️are from our WA state and
▪️also are in our contacts.

And the unknown numbers from AU we are checking if these are spoofed...
And all foreign numbers are deleted...

Above strategy reduced number of unwanted call presently to about one per fortnight from begin of the new year.

Most of the unwanted SMSs are already landing as a SPAM.

So it looks that thanks to the awareness on fraud and SPAM, we are well adapted to handling them. 🤔😊

Hope, that you also will find and adopt your own strategy to minimize unwanted communication... 🍀🍀🍀

I do not do Marketplace or similar but had an interesting discussion with tech savvy daughter who is keen to purchase Taylor Swift tickets for her teenage son.

She relayed her recent experience which involved local Fb Community Noticeboard post. Tickets were slightly less than market value, checked seller's profile, had many friends in common, lived a few km away, kids went to same school.
She starts dialogue, all ok initially, was then asked for ticketek (?) ID and further details that she was not happy to provide. Ceased communication but kept an eye on the page.
Turns out, the legit person had her profile hacked and scammer using her Fb page.
The legit person had no idea 😒

It's a shame that these things happen @Nemeca and I hope things work out for you but I wonder if this is possible in your instance?
Possibly so but I’m still unclear how hackers would have got their PayID. The whole thing is a bit weird.

Bali! My goodness.

Someone coming up to wife and I ordering us to take our bags. Um no, I don't need help. One of them even followed us outside. No we don't need help.

Taxi touts everywhere swarming over you like flies.

I had HI express shuttle booked but Webjet had inconsistent time on e-ticket. We landed midnight and I thought it was midnight but booked shuttle for 10:00pm-11:00pm.

Cannot see name anywhere. Went back and forth twice. Now 1:30am and need taxi to hotel. Again taxi drivers swarming everywhere. How much to go 5-10 minutes to HI Express Baruna. 300,000 IDR. Too much. 250,000 IDR. Still too much but at this stage didn't care.

Apparently shuttle was waiting for us but did not see name not HI Express name anywhere. Oh well.

I have earlier mentioned that some facilities to discover and block the Spoofed Caller ID being used by scammers should be developed and applied by Telcos

I am not sure about this, but in today's The Australian is interesting article about potential impact from AI.
