Scams like these

They may not have a lot of control over the source of their lists, eg. where the numbers come from.

Probably costs less to send a bunch of American stuff to non-Americans, than it does to filter the non-American contacts out.

Besides, with the number of Australians who claim Trump is our real president … they’d still have plenty of marks in Australia.
The numbers might not mean anything but surely (as they are operating from overseas on a worldwide basis) at least someone in their org should understand that +61 is not a US target prefix - but then again probably dumb as 🐶💩

I think most scammers with big setups are from South East Asia and India, I know there are emails out there which’re likely from Africa but all the calls we get are from parts of Asia (the continent).

For those comfortable with pirating content from HBO, yesterday’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has a piece on scammers. The employees are scammed too, lured from 3rd-world countries into applying for international jobs in other 3rd-world countries and then imprisoned by the scam-lords … the next scammer you speak to on the ‘phone has a good chance of actually being a slave.

They're all automated systems, nobody sees the numbers they're just loaded into the system from a file ... and they'd need to spend time/effort/money filtering out the ones that aren't relevant for whatever scam they're pulling today.

My friends FB account was hacked about half year ago and his contacts were stolen including my email address.
Now for a couple of months, about every fortnight, I am getting a spam email under his name, (but not with his real email address) ...

And every time the spammer is trying to trick me to open photos, and this time the subject is titled a "sad announcement"...

An emotional trick, but it doesn't work on me as I know that the spammer 👺 has my email and will try to trick me again, and again ...
😆😂🤣🤣🤣

Dearest Beloved, Good Morning;

Please permit my email. My name is Gina. I am 17 years old. I am officially from Juba village in the Republic of Sudan. I am now an orphan as a result of the death of my parents and 2 of my siblings. I lost my parents and 2 of my siblings during the last armed conflict between various political and ethnic groups. My parents and 2 of my siblings were among the victims of the last political crisis. It was a very sad incident and an unbearable loss. May their souls rest in perfect peace. Quick facts: What you need to know about the South Sudan crisis

My late father before his date traded in cocoa in Ivory Coast. He was a cocoa merchant. He comes to Ivory Coast to buy cocoa and export it overseas. My purpose of reaching out to you is to seek your kind assistance. I want to know if you would accept to undertake guardianship status. I want you to assist me to relocate to your peaceful country where I can live and further my education under your guardianship with the money my late father had in his bank account. My late father had three million five hundred thousand dollars in the bank and I would like to relocate to your peaceful country with it so that I can further my education. I have the bank document that my late father used in depositing the money with the bank in Ivory Coast to prove the existence and I can send it to you for your verification. You will help me to receive the money so that I will be able to relocate to your peaceful country to start a new life and further my education under your guardianship.

Because of my age and limited status and my low experience in life, I am desperately in need of humanitarian assistance that is why I have contacted you. I want you to help me stand before the bank as my guardian overseas so that the bank can transfer the money to your safe bank account. I plead your understanding to allow me to present your name to the bank as my guardian overseas as I have no idea of the process and also do not have any idea about foreign investment and education. I want you to help me to transfer the money to your country and hold it in trust for me as my guardian while I further my education under your guardianship. After receiving it in your bank account you will secure admission for me so that it will be easier for me to relocate to your peaceful country and further my education while you invest the money in your company.

I am presently in Ivory Coast and I have succeeded in locating the bank where my late father deposited the money and have identified myself properly with the bank and also informed the bank about the sad fate my parents and 2 of my siblings had suffered. The bank confirmed the deposit document which i have with me and said that my late father deposited the money in their bank escrow account. The bank agreed to release the money if only I can present any of my late father's business partner or trustee in his business or relation who can attest on my behalf and sign for the release and transfer as stated in the depository agreement my late father signed with their bank when the money was deposited. Now I would like to present your name to the bank as my guardian and my late father's overseas business partner so that you can receive the money in your bank account on my behalf and after that you will help me to come over to your country. Please I plead your understanding to present your name to the bank as my la

It is true that I do not know you in person but I pray that you will have it in your heart to assist me with all sincerity and honesty. Please if you can assist me secure a better future in your country then you can send your contact information that i can present to the bank as my late father's overseas business partner and guardian that will attest on my behalf for the release of the money. I would want you to be my new guardian over this huge amount of money my late father left behind. I hope with your adverse experience I can have the money successfully transferred to your peaceful country and I will have a better life to live in your country under your guardianship. I am willing to give you any amount which you would wish to have after helping me achieve my dream of relocating to your peaceful country. Please try and give me a helping hand so that I can be able to relocate to your country to start a better life and further my education. Thank you and May God bless you and your family.

Thank you and May God bless you and your family as you help me achieve my dream of relocating to your country to start a new life and further my education under your guardianship.

Thank you

With Best Rega

Good.
Lets hope the cops trap more of these people.
This is the 2nd lot of times isnt it, there was the first case of this a few months ago, or is this a rehash news item.
If its a new case, then good, if its a rehash of the other case, not so.
If these people are in Aust on PR visas, or students visas, they would be kicked out, after they have served their time, should teach them a lesson.

In regard to VPSs one, the writing looks too good, grammar too, good, English skills too good.
IELTS level too high for a 17 year old, if its true he/she is 17, he/she has been coached.
Or written by someone older.
No spelling errors, etc.
Maybe an adult writer.
Maybe this is that fake check/cheque that would come out, or identity fraud.

They invented a new word!
Some quick Googling tells me that it's such a commonly used word in India that "updation" is actually considered a real word in Indian English (recall that the language of Indian government & schools is English - Indian English is spoken daily by many many more than 10x the number of people that speak Australian English).

Why did I Google this? Because I work for a Belgian company, and they keep using valid English words (like "performant") which are perfectly cromulent & yet I've never heard of them ... :)

I used to use a wonderful solicitor who is now retired. He used to use old world words like "instant" when referring to a date of contact. I still throw these words / terms into letters from time to time to send the recipient scurrying for their dictionary.

I loved throwing “anti-penultimate” into responses that usually resulted in quizzical facial expressions or Huh?

Reminds me to add "Comptroller of Finance" to my banned words to my Huawei phone, that is the only good of it, that it can ban words, where as Samsung only bans phone numbers, millions.
Guess the Aust police forces still have a long way to stop those sim boxes.
