Scams like these

Re: Federal Govt restitutioin department want to send me a Commonwealth Bank Bank Che

Earlier today I had updated the software on my Samsung Galaxy S5 using the wifi the Virgin lounge. I installed those changes later on when I arrived in Brisbane. Not long after I received an email to my Gmail in Chinese.

兔展|微信H5页é¢_微场景制作工具|移动微æ‚å¿—_电å*邀请函创作平å°

I have translated the page but still have no idea why I would receive an unsolicited email to an email address I use on the phone. Anyone received anything similar?

I get German spam a couple of times a year but I think that has something to do with my email address provider.

Re: Federal Govt restitutioin department want to send me a Commonwealth Bank Bank Che

And I get lots of Russian ladies wanting to get to know me.

Re: Federal Govt restitutioin department want to send me a Commonwealth Bank Bank Che

They do say Russian/African men do masquerade as women in those emails though.

Gosh. Never thought of that. You mean those ladies aren't real? Who'da thunk that. ;)

Re: Federal Govt restitutioin department want to send me a Commonwealth Bank Bank Che

I got a new one today - some clown sending me a zip file for me to open because he sent me $13K + change and he wanted me to confirm the "sale" I had made to him...

Nope, better luck next time...

Re: Federal Govt restitutioin department want to send me a Commonwealth Bank Bank Che

Now I'm getting the same email but they've changed to being in German - good practice for my conversational German, but I'm still not opening them

I've had a couple of emails lately claiming to have ZIP files attached to them, both of which I picked as scams even before I saw the attachment. One of them had "Accounts Payable" in the subject and the other was something like "Parcel confirmation". Both of them had American street addresses in the body of the email. The details in both emails were different but the pattern was the same.

A new one for me-update my profile for BOC gas.Now I do have an account there but address was not BOC.
My thoughts are they may have been hacked.

Re: Scams like these - Hotel Scam

This may just be an urban myth but it sounds TOO CLEVER not to be a live scam.

On balance I think I would fall for it (especially after a long Y to Europe).

You arrive at your hotel and check in at the front desk.

Typically when
checking in, you give the front desk your credit card (security deposit etc) and they don't retain the card.

You go to your room and settle in. All is good.

The hotel receives a call and the caller asks for (as an example) room 620 – which happens to be your room.

The phone rings in your room. You answer and the person on the other end says the following:

'

This is the front desk. When checking in, we came across a problem with your charge card information. Can you please re-read me your credit card number and verify the last 3 digits numbers at the reverse side of your charge card.'

Not thinking anything wrong, since the call seems to come from the front desk, you oblige.

They sound so professional, that you think you are talking to the front desk.

If you ever encounter this scenario on your travels, tell the caller that you will be down to the front desk to clear up any problems. Then,
go to the front desk or call directly and ask if there was a problem.

If
there was none, inform the manager of the hotel that someone tried to scam you of your credit card information, acting like a front desk employee
.

This was originally sent by someone who has been duped........and is cleaning up the mess.

ANYONE travelling should be aware of this one!

Is this worth posting as a separate thread?

Ideally never give out you CCV, but same info by photocopying, camera shot front side of Amex or front and back of any other card

Just had a call from an Indian sounding person, purporting to be from the ATO informing me that there was a lawsuit pending, and asking whether I had a legal rep.

Tried to put on my best worried old person voice but he hung up when I asked him to repeat his name again. Don't suppose he will HUACA.

Phone showed the number he was calling from a 02 6140 3413, expect its fake.

reverseaustralia.com has a couple of comments on this number.

I must be forgetful in my old age

i think i dated you in high school, text me .......... (USA 636 phone number part as text)
[end quote]

phone number shows up as a spammer number...
Wonder if someone is collecting phone numbers for spam?

Happy wandering (away from strange phone numbers)

Today I got the same (recorded) message advising me that Virgin Australia were prepared to contribute $999 towards my next flight with them. All I needed to do was enter my details....

Finally a news article on the automated "Press 1" you've won $999 from Qantas scam.

Authorities warn of sophisticated Qantas phone scam that could leave you hundreds out of pocket

AUSTRALIANS are being fleeced of hundreds of dollars in a sophisticated phone scam with fraudsters claiming to be from Qantas and other major brands, authorities have warned.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) issued a warning today for the public to steer clear of automated phone calls which suggest they have won a cash prize or bonus.
The ACMA said the scam involved a prerecorded call coming through to someone’s phone with an instruction to “press 1” to redeem the cash prize, frequent flyer points or “loyalty reward” from airlines or hotel chains
If 1 is pressed, callers are taken to a human operator who will ask a number of questions, including a request for credit card details.....
