Scams like these

Last night received a call from Telstra warning me that my internet would be switched off for an entire year because of something that had been downloaded onto my computer!
Fortunately I handed over all of my personal details (and Credit Card, of course) and the issue seems to have been resolved.
That's what I call proactive service :P

Hahaha. Last one I got of those, I just replied "don't be a D'head".

It's a competition between me and SWMBO to get to speak to them. On night a guy got her but was asking for Mr Medhed (yes slightly wrong name). SWMBO got him so angry he yelled "I don't want to speak to you."

Reply "ok" hang up.

Must say if I'm not doing much at night I can't wait for the phone to ring. Best I have done is just over 40 minutes with the Microsoft guy, the one I had the other night hung up after only 20 minutes. Nothing better than when they start getting angry at you but they just can't hang up.

The latest one seems to be regarding a car accident some time in the past and they are lawyers claiming to be able to expidite your claim. Obviously there is no accident, but you can have some fun with them along the way.
Be very careful.

I read a story yesterday regarding a Canadian man who received a call from a "tech support" guy from California and he suspected scam and told him so. He was threatened with death etc. I don't have the link to the story now but it is scary.

I'm trying to sell my old car on Gumtree. The number of people interested in the car but 'working overseas on an oil rig can I just pay by Paypal' is phenomenal.

I've had one of these tonight. I'm stringing them along. Interesting that they were happy with my doubling of the price of the car. Can't wait to see how much they will "put in the bank!!"

Very very impressed with the 40 mins Mogul. We take identical approaches - it's fun time! (when they ring) It's the only way to deal with it. My record is 17 minutes, before they hang up. I now count my OMG, golly and wow! responses. Have trouble squeezing more than 2 or 3 of each in before they bail....I'm gunna lift my game. (and 40 mins is the new bar!) With no AFL, sport is a bit limited when at home on the Far Sth Coast of NSW, so I'll have to lift next week to improve on my 17min BP. Had 4 yesterday but only one connected. I was just working out the intro of "I have $1.6 million in my savings account, but I'm overdrawn and need $25 to pay the overdraw fee", but she gave up. Spoilsport! { and yes, just like the old "where did they bury the survivors?" teaser of yesteryear, they don't make the connection between having an excessive deposit amount and being overdrawn.... all adds to the sport of it!}

Just got this one via email. I don't even bank with NAB

Gee my life is boring :!:

I've only managed offers of just over $50 million this week and one Telstra call where the guy couldn't/wouldn't understand that I don't use Telstra for phone or Internet.

I would love to hear how this scam works. I can't figure it out.

As best I understand they transfer more than the price of the car. Then get you to send back the excess by a non-reversible method. Then they reverse their original deposit. Wasn't there a guy posting here recently who got stung like this using paypal. That case was a bit more predictable, in that they were asked to act as in intermediary in a transaction that was very much like laundering. Once the money was sent onwards the original transfer to his paypal account was disputed with paypal leaving the guy with a negative balance.

Yes, that is the gist of it. Mate nearly got done by it before he thought it was a bit fishy. The bit that did it for him was that 'a courier will come and sign for the car and pick it up.' When he asked how they would legally sign the transfer of sale in person, they went dark.

Ive been playing "Roslyn" for the past 24 hours. This is the email trail:

Received this sms

Hello,Is your Vehicle still available for sale?Email me to (goodroslyn(AT)gmail.com)

I replied to it coping in the add for the car. Then got this response.

Hi,
I appreciate your honesty with the detailed explanation with regards to your words on the car status,am really satisfied and i also appreciate your honesty about the condition of the car as that is what i really need most as wont be able to come for inspection as am on-board.
I'm so keen to purchase, kindly send me details for payment so i can proceed as my pick up agent will ring you for pick up after you confirm to me you got the funds cleared into your account.
Thanks

The car was advertised for $17,000, however when I responded to this email, I advised that the price was now $35,000. Roslyn was totally ok with that!!!!

Then got this response

Hello,
I have a little problem with the freighting arrangement, the freighters said i will need to pay for the freighting fees before they can schedule pre-shipping/ pickup date, they charged $1,000 for the pick up and delivery with some papers they need to sort out for the transport, but the problem is they only accept western union money transfer as form of payment which is sent to their Head Quarters where they confirm all Commission Payment schedule for suitable Pick Up Date. ,as you what you are well aware of, I am away at sea and do not have access to western union money transfer,I tried to pay online but i will need a credit card which i didn't bring along, you can make the western union transfer from any post office nearest to you or online at www.westernunion.com.au ,they usually have western union section there, you should have one around you, will it be ok with you if I add the $1,000 to the amount I am transferring? and as soon as the money goes through you can help me make the transfer of the freighting fees through western union money transfer? You are not obliged to help me, but i will indeed appreciate your help as I am a little incapacitated here and Please forward me your mobile number back.
Thanks

Hi,
I have now completed the transfer through my PayPal Internet Banking. I sent $36,100.00 in all to your Bank account but PayPal said they would be holding the funds and it will not be credited into your account because of the excess payments of $1,100.00 I added meant for pick up and insurance fee They said they have emailed you to this effect,Kindly check this your email both inbox/spam/Junk folder for the payment confirmation receipt asap. so you will need to send the $1,000 to my pick up agent's office via Western union money transfer so that PayPal can reflect funds to your account as soon as you have emailed the Western union details to them. I added extra $100 to cover the Western union charges which shouldn't be more than $50 but just to be sure i added $100 and you can keep the remaining extra fee. As stated in my previous mail ,Western Union Transfer can be done at any Post office/Western Union Office and can also be done via the Internet (www.westernunion.com.au)
Here is my Transport Agent Headquarter Info needed to get the money sent through Western Union Money Transfer.

so this is how this one plays out so far. I reckon she's going to get a bit more aggressive now.

Pablo that is awesome. I can't wait to see how it plays out. If everyone did this to them it would be great

Or tell them your PayPal account has been frozen because PayPal advises you that the counterparty to a recent purchase/sale has been identified as a scammer...:D

I wasn't sure myself how the scam worked, but I can see it now. I was looking online to find out and I couldn't see anyone else that actually followed it through. I did find some though that when asked for the address gave the Alice Springs Police Station!
