Scams like these

I guess there is always someone that will respond
I had a few recent situations where I had to answer an unknown number … awaiting calls from tradies, awaiting hospital call to pick mother up, stuff like that.

Responded to a coupla scammers as a result, and now am getting more scam calls. :(
 
still getting the SMS about coles points, toll fees, undelivered parcels etc, but less often.

this was a new one though.
The invoice pdf and sending address actually look like it is from a Xero account, though the subject doesn't read quite right if the receiver is the McAfee user.
Phone number has no mention in reverse directory.

I'd love to know how much money these scammers make
I guess they wouldn’t be doing it if they weren’t getting enough to live on, albeit in countries where life is cheap & the cost of living is too.
 
Millions supposedly, that is the figure ACCC says.
But not only moneys worth, but also the time it takes to block and delete scam sms, and scam emails, or to write "scam" onto reporting websites.
I mean, the govt and telcos could easily work together to stop spoofing, with phone manufacturers.
Or if the govt was more strict about sim boxes, how did those things ever succeeded being brought into Aus by the China Chinese people in the first place, ABF were probably not aware.

But its not only the overt scams, there are some callers who will say, "I am not trying to sell you anything..." spiel, but in the end, its still a scam that they are trying to glean info from us.

Is that Mr YYY xx_, I say, he is not available, what do you want, I just need to speak to Mr YYY xx_, he says, I am not trying to sell him anything the other guy says, I just then put the phone down.

How could anyone fall for this. There are 2 distinct giveaways, apart from the url. Qantas would never say "we are are excited to show our appreciation to our loyal customers" and "we hope this token of our gratitude brings joy to your day"😜
 
Here is a good news story.
I got the scam that wasn’t!
As @JohnK mentioned in a thread companies must be doing some housekeeping
Got an email from Telstra yesterday saying I had been overcharged for international roaming charges. I would be credited an amount plus interest plus sorry $$. Nothing to link to / email looked correct
About $500 all up — my name/email/account details all there
In the past I did have an issue with them overcharging me for O/S calls but could not take them further as it was a series of ‘computer says no’ and I left it.

I sent the email to Telstra cybersecurity team who responded this morning within an hour.

They said it is definitely legitimate and not a scam.

Computer said ‘yes’!!
Later that day we also got a cheque for $80 from Telstra (no explanation).
It did not bounce….😂
But — there is always a but—my $500 credit is yet to land. Having spent an hour of my life that I won’t get back using the chat function on MyTelstraApp they send me a ‘bill’ saying congratulations your account is in credit!
Great - except that account is not in use😤😤
Why not credit my actual current account by putting credit on the card that does the payments

I have to contact them again to get the refund. I sent it to their internal complaints department

Just got a call from a lovely heavily accented lady from Telstra: "Madam how is your internet working at the moment?"
"Wonderful" I reply, "I couldn't be happier with the service 😊". She then says "well the thing is madam the service technicians are getting lots of error messages and problems with your internet". "Oh dear, that is terrible for them" I said, silence and then she hung up, well how rude! 🤣. Thing is I would have continued the call a little longer just to find out what the angle was. Was she going to try and get identity details from me or was she going to try and get me to download a link to "fix" my recalcitrant internet service?
