Scoot will launch 3x weekly flights from Singapore to Vienna from 3 June 2025 using the Boeing 787. Flights from Australia start from $399 one-way (e.g. PER-SIN-VIE).

Quite an interesting route IMHO. It's not currently served by any airline.

This is the schedule:

TR708 SIN 0300 - VIE 1010
TR709 VIE 1125 - SIN 0450 (+1 day)

Runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

This will replace the SIN-BER route, which will not run beyond the end of the current IATA northern winter period.

Ugly connections to SYD most days, particularly on the return (most frequent TR002 is an 0210 departure so 21hr layover, other than on the Sat/Sun flight where you have TR020)
Though $1200 fares to Europe will attract some.

I believe the last time this route was served was an interesting VIE-SIN-MEL OS operated direct flight with fifth freedom from SIN, which was terminated in 2007. I think there was also an OS VIE-KUL-SYD too…

Initially I thought maybe TR figured it would have better EU onward connections than BER…but in Scoot’s media release they seem to think the demand will be from Eastern EU tourism, “Its central location makes it an excellent gateway to explore Eastern Europe and an ideal starting point for multi-city European adventures on scenic road trips. Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is just 50 kilometres away from Vienna Airport, while Budapest, Hungary and major cities in Czechia, Croatia, and Slovenia are all within a three-hour drive”

It was originally NG (Lauda Air)?

Interesting. A bit of digging seems to suggest after Lauda’s merger with OS that it was a wholly owned subsidiary and this route was operated by Lauda but with OS livery and the AUS flights were given OS codes, with VIE-KUL-SYD given the honour of flight code OS1. It wasn’t that long ago really - surely someone on AFF would have flown this route before with greater insights? :)

They did the route for twenty years but finished in 2007 BA to quit Kangaroo Route?

Vienna based carrier Austrian Airlines has announced that it is withdrawing its services to Sydney and Melbourne from March 2007.

Not a single continental European airline will be operating on the famed kangaroo route, which will only be served from Europe by UK carriers, long standing British Airways and recent arrival Virgin Atlantic, although it is thought that BA will soon withdraw allowing its OneWorld partner Qantas operate the route.

Austrian Airlines and the airline it took over, Lauda Air which have operated on what they consider to be a prestigious route for almost twenty years, are axing the services in an effort to slash costs and return to profitability, which is not considered to be a surprise in the current operating climate as the route is expensive and operationally difficult.

While the carrier recorded good loads, yields and fares were not covering the costs of the operations, with Austrian filling aircraft by offering discounted tickets, competing at the bottom of the market with Asian carriers, who enjoy lower operating costs.

As a result of the cut in services to Australia, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur will lose their Austrian services as they were the stopovers for the services to Melbourne and Sydney respectively.

It is expected that 20 members of staff from Austrian's 36 strong Australian workforce will be made redundant, with most going from its Melbourne operation, where it has a call centre as well as airport staff, with the off line sales and marketing operation consolidating in Sydney.

Last European airline to pull out of Oz if we ignore BA (which I try to do). Did Syd KUL in J in the early 2000s on Christmas Eve, there was a condom in the amenity pack 🤔
