Woman near by me in CBR QP complaining loudly on her mobile that she has had to buy an expensive last minute QF fare earlier today because of DJ problems.

If you're referring to the same woman I noticed, she was behind me in the DJ checkin line, being very unimpressed she would miss her connection.

I checked in to the next available DJ flight (17:00+delays), went up to the (almost empty) DJ lounge, had a couple of beers and looked at my options. Used the phone to call Qantas and book an alternative ticket before heading back downstairs to un-check-in and retrieve my bags. Saw her again in QP where she noted that I'd gotten an earlier flight than her somehow..

At least I'll make WP this week rather than in a couple of months now...

Are they serious?
That's specifically referring to flights that were delayed but still flew. You send them the email and they give you a credit voucher as a sorry for the delay sometime in the next week. Seems reasonable to me.

Looks like DJ are pulling out the works in compensation for all affected pax (especially those outside of their home town). Hats off to them.

A few comments piling up on the Courier Mail article - as usual, packed with ill-informed, irrational and irrelevant rabble.

The cause of the problem is reportedly to be with the GDS and not DJ per se. And if the news article is correct, it appears the "backup system" was also part of the GDS and this was being used. No idea how limited it was compared to the normal system, but one probably can question how robust it really was as a backup when push came to shove.

ABC News (7pm bulletin) has reported that JQ suffered from the Navitare outage, but only briefly.

Be interesting to know what, that if as reported JQ uses Navitare, the differences were between their and DJ's implementation leading to the prolonged outage.

100 flights cancelled

100,000 pax affected.

Virgin computer glitch still causing headaches

Virgin Blue's schedule could suffer a second day of chaos with the computerised airlines reservations and check-in systems still offline.

I'm back at the airport tomorrow, will pop over have a look at the carnage if I have time.... Selfishly again I'm on a flexi QF ticket and was hoping to get out earlier - hopefully all the DJ refugees haven't snapped up all the earlier tix!!!

Nice unexpected boost to QF's bottom line I'm sure (all the last minute re-bookings + I'm sure DJ have pissed off a few thousand pax).

have heard Air Niugini send out the planes without the pax when check in bugarup. Very efficient solution. Cheers.

It's been upgraded to "Major Incident" at Virgin Blue (perhaps someone saw the stupidity of pretending it was just a "minor incident") and the IT systems have been restored and are now working:

Virgin Blue Major Incident Report

27 SEPTEMBER 2010: The Virgin Blue Group of Airlines is pleased to advise that our airport check-in and boarding systems are back online and will be operating as normal from the first flights of the day today (Monday, 27 September 2010).

While all check-in processes are back to normal, the airline requests the ongoing patience of guests this morning as we work through flow on effects of yesterday’s network-wide disruption.

While we hope for minimal delays today, we do ask all guests prior to going to the airport to check our website which will be updated with information on any cancellations or changes to scheduled operations.

10 flights cancelled so far today. Most likely crew/planes out of position.

I really do feel for all the mums and dads missing their holidays.

However, justifies the sick feeling in my stomach I get when on the odd occasion I have to fly DJ.

Bit suprised there has been no 'refund' talk from DJ, it's only been a 'credit shell' for flights and accomm, AFAIK.

I think getting credit is a good thing. You could have just gotten a chance to rebook your current flight and that's it.

Of course, had we been in EU, an offer of a refund would have been almost mandatory.

I can appreciate that they did offer something there, but by QF and JQ standards that is pretty poor to not to offer a refund.

But i guess it is a good marketing tool so they can have some of those disrupted pax travel with DJ again and keep them as 'guests' of the airline.

Whilst I kind of know what you mean, this is hardly a regular occurrence for DJ. I get a little nervous too flying them - more because QF are my security blanket and I know they'll do right by me.

I'm interested in why their back up systems didn't work and how reportedly JQ had the same issue but recovered within minutes? (according to sky no news and no news admittedly as my sources!)

For JQ it is the same system and same provider, but they have different IT companies dealing with the backends of the systems.
AFAIK JQ uses IBM and DJ uses Accenture(sp?).

JQ did have some issues but only for about 15min in total. Also with JQ they regurally do manual check-ins at all airports (for training) so they can do it with out too much of a delay to passengers if something does go wrong.
