what is the question that we are trying to answer? It's possible that each company is performing its own business objective.

a) QF as a public company open to full scrutiny and a longer period to turn things around balancing different strategies in QFi, QFd, JQ, Jetstar Asia. Running a marathon.

b) VA2 with a private equity goal to exit at a significant profit in a limited time. The sprinter.

The sprinter does not have to maintain that performance forever, just long enough to show they are ahead and then.....offload the shares.

(And possibly also freight).

(And also also it owns most of its aircraft)

Wasn't most of QF's international 'owned' Airbus fleet written down to zero in recent times? (A380s and the oldest A330s)?

In addition, QF's 787 fleet has been mortgaged/encumbered. So there's the ongoing mortgage bills to pay on the 787s.

You could probably add REX and Bonza into the mix, both companies have Private Equity interests, although the former is a public company despite being majority owned by the Singapore consortium (which includes the Singapore PE company PAG as one of the stakeholders).

787s are not being used to the extent that was the case pre-COVID, so this means lower overall revenue to obviate costs.
 
QF81, the 1120 hours SYD - SIN this morning looks to have as few as 113 whY patrons booked, so seat occupancy may be as low (in that section) as 42 per cent.
 
Nothing that's happening here is unexpected. Our political overlords knew how to shut things down, but they have no idea how to get things going again. Whilst many on this forum will travel, the combination of covid rules and confusion, added to the latest turmoil, makes overseas travel extremely unattractive.
 
Lets not forget QF also charge a pretty premium over VA. Looking at SYD- MEL flights this week many only have the flex $811 fares available so must be selling some at that price.

In some recent survey, only 15 per cent of Australians claimed they'd travel overseas in calendar 2022. I don't know the 'normal' figure but supposedly about 20 per cent of us are regular overseas journeymen and women.
 
Yesterday's AC34 (1215 hours thrice weekly SYD - YVR) was cancelled, but today's QFi's QF75 from SYD to YVR (the 1910 hours nicely timed early to mid evening flight departure) seems to only have 101 of 166 whY seats occupied, a loading of 60.84 per cent in this section.

Yet J is 100% full.
 
Anecdotal only, but I've been flying domestic in a mix of CBR/BNE and CBR/MEL weekly since mid January. Mostly QF but some VA, all Y class. I've definitely noticed the flights being a lot busier in the past two weeks!

Except ADL-CBR it seems. Lost our evening flight and have gone back to 2 or 3 flights a day max with the latest being at 1655 now 😔

Agree, our usual QF flights are now often selling out. I wish they’d bring some more A330s onto domestic to help!

I have seen in recent times that QFi flights rarely go out with empty business seats

Watching loadings and maps in the week leading up to the flight they generally go from D9 I"something" to J1 C0 - presumably as any and all who requested are upgraded with points, thereby extracting as much revenue, notional or otherwise from a flight as possible.

QF are often sold out on at popular times and if you are flying last minute or a week or two out now you will pay through the nose.

Seeing a lot of government back in the air, business too. Plus the football traffic is back as well - forgot about them, they are back with vengeance.

Does anyone know if the full domestic fleet is now back in the air? They really need to add some flights on some routes…

I've been flying relatively frequently with Qantas the last six months and from what I've seen, adding flights shouldn't be an issue because the schedule they publish - and sell - is as if they had the full fleet in operation but only to cancel and consolidate flights closer to operating the schedule. The problem is the removal of the scheduled flights.

Someone posted in the international thread that the A330s are being deployed to trans Tasman and international

On QFd flights, there can be staff deadheading in J, so not every occupied seat necessarily has a revenue-generating traveller.

A friend who travels extensively says he's regularly seen from one to as many as five in the J cabin. Of course, some flights wouldn't have any.
