Seemingly trivial reasons why you choose one hotel/airline/shop over another

For hotels I will preference a club lounge over most things. This is combined with location and access to public transport.

Opening windows are always highly desirable - my hotel in Salzburg was so hot and I couldn't get it below 23 - and it had a window that opened about 4cm and that was it. After complaining get again the handyman came up and used his key so I could open it completely while constantly saying Verboten. My comment was Danke Danke Danke and I promise I won't jump

A reasonable work space in the room if travellling for work. Or failing that somewhere else in the hotel you can easily work from. One place I stayed in April in Brussels I chose because they still had a decent desk and chair, that was 18 months earlier - now they’ve done some room refreshes and these have been replaced by sort of loungey type chairs and a low table. Not so good. Moxy where I’d stayed 12 months ago had nothing in room but lobby work station areas - so better in that regard. .

Bed not pushed up against the wall
Toilets without sensor lights - they blind you in the night
Access to a washing machine
Two pillows per person in the room
Opening windows
Tea making facility in the room
Curtains that overlap so no light gets in
No really bright lights on appliances, smoke alarms, power points or light switches, alarm clocks etc
Has a power point or USB charger on both sides of the bed - we both have phones to charge!
Proper coat hangers not those ones welded to the rail by a ring
Close to public transport
Close to non- hotel food options
Loyalty program

A good location for both transport and sightseeing. Included buffet breakfast and other extra goodies that tempt you to choose their hotel over another. Usually I choose 4 star or above to get the luxury that is missing in my day to day life

A hotel with a refrigerator where I can set the temperature, none of the ones where they're already preset or are essentially "coolers".

For me, it's being in the city and not have to travel into it - if I do, then it has to have a public transport nearby. And then price - I am usually a solo traveler, so for accommodation, it has to be under $150 a night (domestic).

When going to a place for the first time, then I'll look at things like the shower type - I hate the ones that are a bath/shower combo. My knees aren't too good and I am always afraid that I will slip in the bathtub trying to get in or out.

Taking the 'seemingly trivial' to petty, I avoid the QF lounge in LHR because the bathrooms / showers are freezing cold and the water pressure in sinks unreasonably high and I end up splashing water all over, including my clothes. I like warmth and the ability to use water pressure of my choosing. The CX lounge next door works much better for me.

USB ports by the bedside...obviously an issue in non 5 star hotels... but if I've had to get out of bed to turn my phone off the next morning when the alarm goes off, because it's charging where there's a plug, I'm never staying there again!

I always used to stay in the same hotel in Muscat because it had a floor sensor that would turn on a low light by the bathroom door as you walked past the sensor. Perfect when you're not used to the layout of the room and don't want to properly wake up.

Well I did not say that I always get them all, but in fairness I do work my way through this list mentally each time I book a hotel. At least I don't get any nasty surprises that way!

It is so annoying to not have your phone nearby if it is the alarm - or to choose not to charge overnight so you don;t have to get up to turn off the alarm - and then have to remember to charge the phone (by which I mean camera) before going out for the day.

The option for twin bed or king bed size only. We are not share double bed size people, especially when travelling, so if not twin or king, I pick a different hotel.

If hiring a car, a hotel with parking - valet preferred and a onsite pool or at least a pool or near access to pool/spa/massage/pedicure

An absolute hotel killer/will not book is room with shower over bath tub, ie the shower of death.

Emirates insisted I keep my window shade closed on a JFK-DXB flight that departed 1am local time, and arrived 7pm local time, experiencing the passage of a full day as we flew over Europe.

For that reaosn alone I will, if I can avoid it, never use them again, even if it costs me more (which, being in PER, is a big call)
